Thought I'd share this, I got a bit ticked off with the sticky nature and slightly messy application method of many waxes and so decided to give gear oil a try on two of my bikes. The most successful was 140w oil and was applied to a clean chain with a stiff'ish stubby brush. I didn't need much at all and there was very little excess to wipe off once applied. These photos were taken after a ride of 110 miles. I'm reallyimpressed, It's quick to apply and doesn't collect grit etc and is cheap.

I use 80/90 gear oil, works a treat.
No more overpriced " chain lube"
I give it a wipe with a cloth between applications and haven't had to clean the chain in 4700 miles.

I also use Gear Oil and unless this 140w stuff comes with the same alluring perfume, I ain’t swapping.

Been saying this for years. Chain + oil, kinda obvious, but they do try to sell you these wax products. Load of shite IMHO.

Yet to replace a chain or sprocket on a road bike.
