Hi I have a 2012 explorer 1215cc and was wondering if everybody uses the recommended tyre pressures that’s in the manual which are F-35.9 R-42 psi. Or do people decide themselves what they want. Only been riding a year so it’s all new to me. Any help would be appreciated thanks
You can vary the tyre pressures on any bike to suit your riding style & weight. The MRP is a guideline, & actually some tyres work better with a modified pressure.
You may say that. I couldn't possibly comment! Oh come on!!! You set me up for that! I'm actually surprised that no-one beat me to it.
I tend to run mine at the recommended pressure or about 1 psi over. Some owners swear that 2 psi over is best but I think that depends on the model of bike.
With a bike like an Explorer you normaly should stick to the recommended pressures. It's all about the heat that's generated and getting to the optimum heat as soon as possible - this is to maximise grip and minimise wear. Low pressures can generate too much heat, and affect the shape of the tyre in contact with the tarmac so that performance and handling will be adversely affected. If you ride with over inflated tyres then the ride can be overly hard and unless you are an 'aggressive' rider who leans the bike right over on bends, roundabouts and corners then you'll square the tyre off pretty quickly. So unless you know what you're doing I'd stick to the recommended pressures for your tyre make.
Can l agree to disagree? What you say is true & scientifically proven, but what if he's a fat tw8t or a skinny cnut?? The weight that is added to the bike also has a significant result on what you should set tyre pressures at.......... Also, if you have a lardy pillion & panniers & top box filled to the brim with coal it will also change your theories!
Here's a page that will keep you amused/baffled for an hour DD. http://www.triumphmotorcycles.co.uk/services/tyre-selector Click onto the tyre selector chart link for some REALLY heavy sh*t!!!
Not sure it's going to make a significant difference over what's recommended The major manufacturers work with the major tyre manufacturers to get a selection of brands at optimal spec. For bikes like the Explorer the one recommended pressure is to suit the maximum payload of the bike when ridden on tarmac.
My understanding is that rider weight shouldn't make a difference on these bikes. But I'm no expert so tomorrow, when he's back at work, I'll ask someone who will know.
Now then you silly boy, coal was just an example, we all know top boxes are for our porn mags when we go solo camping!!!!........
Just to throw something else into the mix it also depends how you check your pressures. If for instance you ride a few miles to a garage and use what is likely to be a much misused gauge you’ll likely get a spurious reading as the tyres will be warm and the gauge could read +or - a few psi. If you get a good quality gauge and stick to using just that when the tyres are cold (as recommended by pretty much all tyre manufacturers) you’ll set them much more accurately. P.s dilli, I’d recommend you alter your pressures relative to the amount of coal you are going to carry
I dont get out on the bike as often as I would like so I tend to stay out and do longer rides 100/200 miles some days again this affects pressures. Recommended pressures are for quick heat ups so not longer rides.
How could you put Bushmills into the same box as JD???....Buy more Bushmills if you have space to fill!! Yes, porn mags wrapped around the bottles can stop that annoying clinking & also act as a comforter when you're alone in your tent!!!!..........
Porn mags of course thats it, Thats why the bikers I see with top boxes seem to hang their heads in shame, that must be it.
Nah, that’ll be neck strain, leant over trying to see the damart catalogue as they knock one out into their thrapping sock!
