    Good morning,

Can anyone help? I've had a friend strip down, jet and clean my carbs on my Triumph Legend tt 2009 but riding think hes properly set them back up. Stutters power at 65mph and I started it up yesterday and its puffing out some black smoke from the exhaust.

So I'm wanting to know any recommended triumph mechanics who will sort this. I like to keep things close and normally prefer not to go direct to a dealer hence this post.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance

Where in W.Yorks are you, Ashley? If Thorne is anywhere near you then try this lad. He used to service my Trident 900 when he worked at Adi's place in West Cowick before Adi decided to pack it in for other other ventures. www.pjmotorcycleservices.co.uk is his website. Trident needs a service soon, before its MOT, so I must make an appointment to see him!

    Ashley.
Welcome to the Family if I have missed you. Do drop us all a picture of the steed. Try the old youtube you might get help to do it your self. Also you know if carbs have been messed with they need re setting and balancing again and they do need to settle down first.

Good question, I’ve not heard of any independent triumph bashers in West Yorkshire other than the obvious dealer in Shipley but PJ motorcycles I had heard of with good reports

    Thanks for the responses.

I've heard of PJ Motorcycle so I will look at my options. I'd love to spend time on YouTube and learning to do it myself but just dont have the time. Maybe when the kids have grown up!! Ha

I am not clear from the OP if the jets are original sizes (38 or 40 pilots and 100 mains) with standard airbox and exhaust. Air screws should all be 2 to 2.25 turns out......and all synchronised to open/close simultaneously.

Black smoke is either oil (probably more on the overrun more than accelerating) or a very rich condition. There are various possible issues with float levels and torn diaphragms that might arise.

The question is, Ashley, are you up for having a look?

Hi, thank you for the reply. I took the bike out around town at the weekend to see if the smoke clears. It did so I put it down to oil.

As for looking myself I'm kind of happy to. I've learnt that the plugs tell a big story so as soon as I get some time I'm going to strip of the seat and remove the plugs to see what they reveal.

Is there I tool that I would need to take the plug out with?

You'll need a proper spark plug spanner with a rubber insert to grip the plug . This one should work though I can't remember what size plug it is and I think you need an elbow jointed one for the middle plug - it's obstructed slightly by the frame backbone.

    https://www.halfords.com/workshop-t...rofessional-long-reach-spark-plug-wrench-14mm

You might need to check that it will fit the 18mm hex on the plug.

This is the type that you'll need for the centre plug

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Laser-5908...ug+spanner&qid=1567532924&s=automotive&sr=1-8

In fact this might actually do for all of the plugs, but, depending on how long the plugs have been in there, you might need some extra leverage on the T-handle. Apply any extra leverage with some caution as this type of spanner is usually welded together and can easily break at the T-joint.

Before you do the job buy some of this

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Carlube-XC...rease+tube&qid=1567533379&s=automotive&sr=1-7

and lightly grease the thread portion of the plug before re-inserting it. This should help prevent the thread corroding and getting seized in the head. Just be sure not to overtighten the plug when you replace it!

Thank you. I've ordered those from Amazon so once they arrive I will get stuck in.

So just to clear my head a bit. You mentioned about the needles being about 2 to 2 and a quarter turns screwed out so if I was to screw them in and each of the three unscrewed them out to that would that be correct, maybe with the odd tweak? I'm firstly going to look at the plugs but just a question.

Hey, so I've checked the plugs and they are black so if I am correct ita running too rich?

So how do I now deal with it running Rich? Do I turn each of the screws a 1/4 turn clockwise? If so do I do it when the engine is cold? Hot? The Haynes manual just baffles my brain with all sorts of things but I'm told how they do it and go to the extreme of connect a fuel hose whilst tank is off, temperatures etc. Isnt needed.

    Thanks
    Ashley
