I have a 1999 Tiger 855i (T709) that I will have to buy a torque wrench for so that I can change the spark plugs in it, this will involve taking the petrol tank off the bike first.
Looking at the manual the slightest torque setting needed is 5Nm and other jobs require over 100Nm of pressure. What is the best approach when it comes to buying tools like this? Bicycle torque wrench's go as low as 0Nm but they are spindly affairs, if you look at mechanics torque wrenches they start at around 20Nm but are more robust. Does any serious DIY Mechanic need at least two Torque Wrenches? or is there one wrench that can do the lot?

Torque wrenches available from Halfords & alike are suitable for the home mechanic & whether or not you require 2 so that you have all recommended torque settings covered is purely down to you & your confidence.
I only have one torque wrench which i think goes from 50Nm-300Nm which i find sufficient. I have been spannering around with cars & bikes for long enough to know the feel of when a nut/bolt is tight enough. Regarding spark plugs, just nip them.

Also, if you are going down the route of torque wrench ownership, make sure you get it checked & re-calibrated if required, regularly. A friend of mine snapped a few bolts rebuilding his Fireblade engine, doing them up to the recommended torque in the Haynes manual. He later found out that his torque wrench, which he relied on as being gospel, was 10Nm out of spec.

I have always been told to remember to wind the torque wrench off when not in use otherwise you stretch the springs.
Most bolts and especially the spark plugs do not require over tightening.. As PIG says nip then up you don't need to be able to swing from the wrench...
remember everything that looks like aluminium will strip its threads if you over tighten it....

Whatever happened to 'hand tight plus quarter of a turn' for plugs'?

I suppose that went out with 'thumbnail' gap for the plugs too?
