Hi I'm a newbie having a nightmare as my bike keeps cutting out when warming up. Coils are ok and primary coil is ok. I've been advised to test a CDI ECU box. (Thunderbird Sport 900 - 2001) Ideally, I'd like to test one before I purchase as they're not cheap new. If anyone has got one that I can test first that would be great and obviously I'd cover all postage costs. I know it's a long shot but any help would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers Andy
Hi Andy. Two things - first I'd delete the postcode from your profile details. I know it wouldn't get anyone to the door but it could quite easily get the wrong type of person much closer than you'd want them! Second, it would be worth putting the part reference number of the ECU on your post request. I don't know if all the T300s had the same spec. ECUs - if they did I MIGHT be able to help. I have a spare ECU (somehwere!) but I don't know if it works or not - it came in a box of bits I bought years ago.
Hi and welcome to the forum I know you said that the coils are OK but it might be worth checking out this old thread on here: "Triumph Thunderbird Sport ignition coil failure?"
Hi Adie First thanks for the heads up about the postcode. Didn't even know it was on my profile! And thanks for the offer of your spare ECU I'm going to try and get hold of the part number from Triumph. So, I'll get back to you once I've found it. Appreciate your help. Cheers
Hi Adie I've found the CDI ECU number which is T1290063. Would you mind checking if that is the same as yours? Cheers Andy
Hi Andy. Yep, will try to find it in the chaos of my workshop and will get back to you - hopefully later!!
Hi Andy. Apologies for the delay!! I DID indeed find the spare ECU and, unfortunately, it's bad news. The part number code on mine is T1290004 - it's a PVL part. If there's a way of finding out whether or not there's any cross compatibility with earlier part numbers then you'd be more than welcome to try it if it helps eliminate your unit but you'd need to be sure that the earlier box is actually capable of firing the TBS up otherwise it won't help with any elimination work. My TBS is a '99 model so I took a quick look under the seat to check if it had the same ECU as yours but, unfortunately (again!), the ECU on these is obviously not under the seat. I assume it's under the tank somewhere? If you get desperate I'd be willing to try taking the tank off to remove the ECU and let you swap it into yours to try?
Something else to check would be the ignition pick up coil. Same symptoms as you described, happened on my 95 Thunderbird. I changed the ignition pick up coil. Never had a problem since changing it.
Thanks Adie No need to apologise, really kind of you to go to such trouble. I'm going to call Triumph and see if I can get an answer from them tomorrow and I'll get back to you. Appreciate your help. Cheers Andy
HI I've just been in touch with Triumph and they've said the part should be compatible so it would be great if I could give it a try. Is there a way I can contact you privately to discuss postage etc? I'm happy to give out my email or is there a way to message privately on here, that I haven't discovered? Thanks again
