Hello all, I'm a newbie here. I have just proudly bought a 1996 triple 900. She has been sat in a garage for a few years- (I drained the fuel out of the tank a few days ago & it was rusty brown colour that's how long it's been sat) I'm a trained mechanic & M.o.T tester, I want to give her a hefty service. She's just gone over 40,000m on the mileage clock. What service should I be looking to give her? Any engine component over haul given the circumstances? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hi, thank you all for the warm welcome and the speedy response. Ok brilliant, I’ll check the valve clearances, and yes I have heard about the dreaded sprag clutch, I have forked out for a good recommended battery. I forgot to mention though when I drained the tank, the reserve filter has completely disintegrated on the tap. Where’s the best place to get hold of a new one? Many thanks again

The Petcock on these bike are a mare for leaking if any rust gets into them and they cant be stripped. if the bikes left for a period the carbs refill. Might be worth getting the tank sealed to stop rust . Sometimes the floats stick ( hence the reason to ensure the petcock works) When they stick fuel gets into the airbox and can get into the engine oil, Would advise you to turn off the petcock before you get home when riding to empty the carbs before parking up if only used now and then or over winter.

Just on cleaning out the tank, Its hard to get the last bit out of anything you put these tanks because of the lip on the cap. I used lead fishing shot to clean the loose rust out of mine as it was too hard to get nuts or bolts out of the tank. I just flushed them out through the petcock hole at the bottom. Maybe you won't have the same problem,

Thank you all for the brilliant advice. I have taken the whole carb unit off tonight as the bike unsurprisingly wouldn’t start. Carbs are all blocked up, gonna flush & clean them as necessary. The air box has seen better days, and to be honest I would like to put individual uprated air filters on each carb. Is there particular filters out there that anyone would recommend to buy? Thanks again

Re the airbox and filters, have a look at www.squaredeals-ltd.co.uk or www.triumphparts.gbr.cc to see what they have available. My Trident has a K&N filter in the original airbox which required no setting up, whereas, allegedly, individual filters can adversely affect the carburation in some - but not all, it would seem - cases.
To keep the carbs and the rest of the fuel system clean inside I regularly use Redex in the petrol. Works well for me but other similar products are available. Whatever takes yer fancy really.
