Hi everyone, i bought a cheap early 595 a year ago that was running a bit rough, after getting a local mechanic to give it a major service inc valve clearances a complete rebuild of the linkage new what he called evac pipes on the throttle bodies and various other bits, he couldn't get it to idle properly,so on went a new idle valve and new temp sensor. it was still idleing a bit high (2000) and the temp gauge wouldn't come much above cold but it went ok. One quick blast later and i got home to find it boiling and coolant leaking big style (head gasket gone), i'm after advice as to what to do next, does anyone know of a triumph specialist in bristol (not fowlers) and how much a head gasket will cost to do? shall i sell it as a project to a competant home mechanic, my mechanic says that because they're a liner engine they're a pig to do as the liners move which screws the whole engine! really don't want to sell it but don't know whether i can justify more cash. I bought this as i had a new one in 97 so a bit of nostalgia going on here. Many thanks in advance for any help
Don’t think you’ll get a reply mate, he’s only posted twice since 2017 You’re right though, they’re not bad to work on as long as you’ve got a bit of mechanical nouse
Cheers for the update Freck. I found the forum very useful when i was doing a top end overhaul on my t595. I had the change the head over as the inlet valves had receeded below the service limit and also the cams and alloy journals they running in had become scored due to skipping regular oil changes (probably) or do they wear anyway. I also had metalic bits in the oil when it was changed and hence i bought another t595 instead as i think the bike i one off ebay had probably been neglected in a past life.
Yeah mine had been neglected and then later bodged by a so called professional mechanic to get it to sell. It looked great when I got it but after having it a while and delving a little deeper when problems arose, I found all sorts of bodges that I’ve now rectified including a top end overhaul for a leaky head gasket
