Straight bars

    Hi, after a wee run out yesterday, I have decided I really don't like the bars on my America. I am quite happy with the width and the rise but feel the bars need to be straightened out. My wrists are twisted too far out and the bars are too near me.

    I want to just push them about 4"~6" forward and they would be perfect

    I cannot do such a thing, so therefore need to buy a new set of bars. Has anybody else done this change and what bars did you go for? Been looking at a few sites, but it is hard to tell from pictures alone.

    I have measured the span and am looking for bars approx 32" wide with a 6" rise and a small amount of pullback, no more than 3"~4". This is all a bit of a guess, but don't know of anywhere I could ride to to try them out with the bike.

    Been looking on this site, but really would be a guess. LINKY

    Sounds like the Speedmaster bars might suit. They are straighter and further forward. I road tested an America before I bought my Speedmaster the America made me feel rather silly and limp wristed.

    Harley bars will fit the America as it shares it's 1" bars with the Bonneville (though not the style of bar).
    I had Harley bars on my Bonneville for a while.

    Hi MrOrange, have you tried adjusting your existing bars to make them more to your liking? If you haven't, here's a "How to.............."

    1. Slacken but do not remove the 4 central riser bolts that hold the bars in position;

    2. You should now be able to rotate the complete handlebars forwards by an amount to suit your needs. I would go with 1 inch increments; then do a test sit. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE HANDLEBAR CONTROL POSITIONS AT THIS STAGE - that will be dealt with later once you've found the position you like.

    3. You'll notice that by rotating the bars forward, you also change the angle of your wrists.

    4. If you need to change the angle at your wrists, you can do this by putting the 'bars in a vice and using a stout bar or a ratchet strap apply consistent pressure the end 8" on the 'bar and bend them forward.

    5. Now that you have the 'bars how you want them, refit the 'bar controls to taste. You may need to file down the little plastic locating pin on the RHS control.

    yeah, have tried moving them. When I went out for a test ride, first thought to myself was need to move these bars forward for my long reach. But unfortunately that alters the angle of the 'grip' part of the bars, so not a solution.

    Don't really fancy bending the bars. Be difficult to get the same both sides. I also fear that the angle to bend would weaken them and maybe crack the chrome.

    Going to Triumph dealer on Saturday and hopefully have a speedmaster to sit on and try.
