Just noticed today that when I pull the clutch lever in as it reaches the handlebars there is a short squeak identical to the squeak the brake discs sometimes make. In fact as I pull up to the garage and apply the brakes and pull in the clutch I have no idea which is causing the squeak. Any thoughts?
I hope it isn't as obvious as that but I will check tomorrow, sounds like it is coming from the engine. The lever is light and smooth. Only had its 12 month service last Thursday but apart from the oil change I can't believe they have done anything to cause it. Does make me wonder if when I stop in traffic and apply the brake and pull in the clutch as to whether the clutch is the one making the noise as the sound is always the same whether I apply the front brake or the back.
Just been directed to a similar post which resulted in a new clutch replacement, looks like a trip to Triumph is necessary.
Try it standing still or gently moving without using the brakes If the noise is there then you know it’s the clutch If it’s not there you know it’s the brakes
went to the dealers and have the bike booked in to have checked. Everything is working fine but the noise is definitely the clutch.
Finally had the bike in for a check today and Triumph confirm that there is an allignment problem that has been known on other Speed Twins as well so they are doing the work under warranty. As an aside, I was given a T120 as a courtesy bike. What a contrast! Completely different! Not going to say in what way as it is better in some ways but not as good in others. Will get more details about the clutch problem when I pick it up in a day or two.
Wow has it taken nine months for your dealer to fix the problem? Was the alignment issue with the clutch or brakes?
Not quite, I had the bike booked in during the lockdown in I think last November but cancelled it because of other reasons. But the problem was logged so even though the bike is outside the two year warranty (just) it is covered. There is definitely a problem with the clutch and apparently Triumph are aware of it and have repaired the issues on other owners bikes under warranty. I am pretty sure that the problem was there from day one but I thought it was a disc brake issue. Hope to hear back from the shop today and will enquire on the specifics of the problem. Doesn't seem to affect the performance of the bike but must be being caused by something not being right.
Got the bike back this afternoon. New clutch springs and front pressure plate. From what I gather either the plate was not central in some way or not tightened down evenly. Either way it was an assembly error from the factory.Seems perfect now so we shall see if it is fixed permanently. Mechanic told me that their shop had never experienced this kind of issue before and yet a Street Twin owner came in this week with the same symptoms! As an aside I noticed the grey paintwork on the clutch badge was missing in places when I got it home. I don't know if the shop did it or if it has been like it for a while but I noticed that the grey paint has been applied to a morror finished aluminium surface so it wasn't going to stay there for long. I took the badge off and put it in some boiling hot water and the rest came off with the edge of a credit card to leave a polished rim.Have waxed it up and will put it back on.
