Imagine my shock, I have actually found that the DVLA can be very helpful and polite (well on this occasion the lady, Gwyneth, I spoke to was so she's probably been suspended, transferred or fired by now);).
Just goes to show no matter how crap the DVLA website is for getting a simple answer or, how impenetrable the automatic phone system is, when you persevere and actually manage to speak to a human being the advice I wanted was very clear, simple and conciseo_O .
So before losing your temper and slagging them off, (like me and probably plenty of others have done many times in the past), fight your way through the "press 1 for this, press 2 for that" routine and eventually you can talk to them. You never know but you may end up just as shocked and surprised as I was.:)
It goes against my up bringing, creed and religion to praise any of the jumped up job's worth's who think they are in positions of authority but this time I had to break with a long family tradition so credit where it due.
    Well done DVLA:)

It's just a pity that some of our 'less mature population' are only prepared to 'demand'
It seems that if you treat people with respect, politeness etc you can get what you want.
As a 'mature gentleman':p and being as 'I wer brung up proper like', using please, thank you etc does tend to pay off.
Both my kids were brought up the same way. Some many years back we went for a pub lunch somewhere in the Lake District, as they were about to leave, a late middle aged couple who had been sat near us came over and complimented Mrs Al and me on how well our kids behaved, I said something like, "well they're being brought up the same way as both of us and know better". When I went to pay I found out that this couple had paid our bill.:)
