Hello! I bought a Triumph Scrambler 900 from 2009. Now I found a oil leckage under the engine. I don't know if this is a serious oil leckage problem. Who can help? Please see pictures... thanks in advance!
If that's from 2009 then you have nothing to worry about, wash it off with some petrol and see if the plug nips up.
Hi Holger, welcome to the forum. As the others have said. That just looks like you have a little bit of oil wicking along the threads of the plug, not really a leak like I was imagining at first. Clearly you have not had the joys of owning old British bikes back in the 1960's, that had engine casings glued together with red hermetite sealant in an attempt to keep oil inside for longer than a week or so. Primary chaincases used to be difficult to seal - you'd see bikes parked up with several drips on the ground in a very short time. Old joke was that if you saw a British bike without any oil under it, it probably hadn't got any in it. Suddenly I feel old.....
Easy fix. Drain the oil, remove the plug, clean the area, wrap a small amount of PTFE tape around the threads, replace plug, refill with oil.
The only thing I would add, is that I would wait until it is time for the next oil/filter change to fix this minor "weep:.
Yes leave it as it's nothing . Maybe just check for tightness. When replacing use a new seal and you shouldn't need ptfe / sealants etc. Keep an eye on oil level but won't change visibly with s tiny weep like that !
Just to ease your mind a bit further, get a half teaspoon of oil, and pour it onto a paving slab, or tarmac. . Whatever. See how far it spreads? It goes an awful long way, half a teaspoon. It puts oil leaks into context! Unless it's a pool, it nearly always looks worse than it is. Just clean it up and monitor it, and do as suggested above at oil change time
I have a similar problem I scrapped my oil plug on a speed bump now its leaking from the plug. you guys think I can just replace plug and washer or will I need to replace my whole oil pan. any help would be amazing
thank you. im new to sportbikes and was worried about an expensive fix right after getting my new bike
Like Ade says if the sump plug is loose that is likely to be the problem and you should be ok tightening it, but if it’s tight then there is likely to be further damage. What bike is it? Edit. Just read your other post, Daytona 600
I start to worry if i dont see that my Trident hasn't marked its spot. Old British bikes like to keep their territory marked.
