Hello, this is my first post on the forum. I'm working on getting a 2008 Thruxton back on the road for a friend. It seems like the carbs need removed and cleaned. I've rebuild Harley carbs before, but Triumph is totally new to me. I do not have a service manual for the bike and really don't want to start tearing stuff apart without one. Are factory service manuals available, if so, where is the best place to get one? Would a Haynes manual be good enough? I'm assuming they're much cheaper. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a manual that I'm only going to use once. The bike has been in my friend's garage for about six years. She's just trying to get it cleaned up and running so she can sell it. I tried to attach a picture, hopefully it worked. Thanks in advance.
Welcome Bob, that’s a nice looking Thruxton. Shame it’s not being used. I think you should be fine with a Haynes manual. Otherwise, there’s lots of knowledgeable guys and girls here that could help if you’ve got queries. If you’ve done other carbs before you shouldn’t have any problems, you just need to be methodical and have a clean tidy work area when rebuilding them. Have you got access to an Ultrasonic cleaner? It’d make the job much easier. Good luck with the recommission

A brief observation but it would be worth comparing local ads to fix its value ‘as is’ versus ‘restored to running order’. The answer should indicate which route to take and which might sell quicker. Self evidently it needs an oil change, new tyres, tubes, battery and tank and carburettor flush/clean. The hydraulic fluid likely needs changing but the hoses should be ok. $350 and a day’s labour/labor?!
Are you referring to what I'd call the brake fluid? If so, right now the carbs and bleeding the brakes are the two jobs on my list. When we pulled it out of the garage there was no fluid in the front brake reservoir. I haven't seen it run yet, but she said when she started it up there was fuel leaking out of a hose coming from the carbs. I'm going to pick up a Haynes manual see what kind of trouble I get into. Yup, brake fluid. And when you put it in a clutch mechanism it magically becomes clutch fluid! (And I know yours is cable actuated!) Those crusty carbs would come out of an ultrasonic bath gleaming inside and out, emulsion tubes, jets, the lot....... Just need to use the right cleaner.
I think you are right. Carb cleaner didn't touch that mess. If I get my hands on an ultrasonic parts cleaner, how much more would I have to strip off the bodies of the carbs before I put them in there. For example, the manual says not to remove the throttle position sensor. What about the rubber fuel and vent lines? What type of cleaner would I need to use? The right float valve was stuck in place. Fuel is leaking out of the vent hose anytime the petcock is turned on.
I went with 50/50 simple green and water in my new ultrasonic cleaner. Nine minutes of that and everything looked great. Got it back together, no more leaking gas. I took it for a short ride and I've got to say, I like it. I own and ride a couple Harley Davidsons, so the Thruxton felt nice and smooth. Thanks for the help.
