3 minutes ago Hello All, I have had my 1966 Triumph TR6 650 since I was in my early twenties and I'm in my late 60's now. It was recently in a forest fire here in California and the engine and transmission were ruined. I don't have the heart to junk it and have been shopping on the internet for a used engine and transmission. I recently found this for sale: "1971 Triumph Trophy 650cc TR6C engine, transmission and carburetor." I am not a mechanic but have found a Triumph mechanic who is willing to install a new engine if I can find one. My question is 'will the this engine fit onto my bike frame?' Any help you can give me would be greatly valued. I just feel sad when I look at my bike. I've always loved that bike. Thank you very much! Sincerely, Patrick PS I am brand new to this forum so don't yet know anyone on the forum.
Welcome Patrick, When you say ruined what do you mean? Discolered? Melted? Motor may be in better shape than the rest of the bike. Lots of really great people here that will help you out.
Thank you for replying Phred. The forest fire was a bad one and pieces of the engine came off when I moved it. My wife says junk it (she doesn't like bikes) but I do want to keep it and will keep searching for a replacement engine. Do you know if the one I located would work? Again, thanks so much for reaching out to me. The Triumph is a special bike and I had wanted one since I was a child. Patrick
Thank you. It's stored in a shed at my cabin in the mountains. My house was lost in the fire, too ,but carpenters in my family built a one bedroom cabin there for me and I go there on alternate weekends. I'll take photos in two weeks but the bike looks sad. I see it as it will look again. I was very proud ot it. Patrick
Patrick, I thin k all unit 650 engines had the same mounting points. so the cases should fit. the internals of the burnt engine will probably be all good if the cases are intact. do not dispose of the old engine keep it. good spares are getting hard to find
Yes as said all unit 500, 650 and 750 engines will fit your frame but you may want to get the frame checked out for warping its posible the brazing could be also compromised if it got hot enough.
Another option would be to strip the engine and just locate the parts req to rebuild it, this way you know its all ok Patrick.
Whereabouts are you? I can recommend Performance Cycle in Diamond Springs, 95619. The owner has worked on many Triumph engines - including the Texas Cigar, I believe.
Hi Patrick. Yep, I realised you were in California but I know just how big the state is, so Performance Cycle might not be near enough. However, in my experience they ARE worth either a drive or making some arrangement to get the motor to them. The owner is John PROTO and he has worked on a lot of Triumph engines. He might just remember me (Paul's English friend!) so, if you do use them, let him know I recommended him! Good luck with it and please let us know how you fare.
