Fibreglass was all the rage in the 60s and 70s. There was also a guy called Tracy who also made some fibreglass kits Some are still about Original pieces can be found if you fancy one. Here's an original complete with the Frank Frazetta artwork. Nice.
Yep, I agree, they are horrible. S'funny how the Hurricane became uber cool but essentially the same body designs didn't do so well on other models or makes. Just shows you, the circle of cool can be circumnavigated just slightly too far. A bit like platform shoes.
I remember a local lads father (mid-70s) making his own fibre glass kit for his bike (I can’t remember what it was, but in my memory, it’s a Norton) He made a full racer type fairing and back end... I think the tank wasn’t included but it’s all a bit hazy. I remember being impressed though, that someone was taking a vehicle and totally changing it. Over the next few year, he made his own sailing yacht in his back garden. Had to get a crane and a lorry into the field next to their house to get it out. Some people’s visualisation of projects and ability to see things through is fantastic, that’s why I like Milly so much... you see it happening. Anyway, I rather like the above bikes... they have a unique look (edit- not the fluffy seat though)
Yes, it became a bit of a fad in the 70s. It seemed like everyone had some sort of project on the go. From kit cars to surfboards and canoes. It's all I could do to build a seat base so doing a whole yacht was, well, pretty impressive.
Awesome letter! I haven't seen that before. Fiberglass can be beautiful if done correctly but some of the vw kit cars and such were awful, but the Hurricane is rad, but I'm definitely partial. Here's couple close up shots of the fiberglass work on my hurricane. I think it's a good balance of flashy and classy.
