Hello everyone! I have a sweet Sprint 900 sport (885cc 1998) and unfortunately my engine gave out. I need to replace a lot of components and was thinking it's best to buy a whole engine. Because this model is not that popular I can't find one. I know it has a matching engine with some other models like the Trident. My question is if the motor of the Tiger 900 (885cc 1993-1997) matches the one of my bike.

I would really appreciate if someone can help me out!

    Be well.

    Yassou Aris!

In theory any of the 3 cylinder 900 range of engines from 1991 to 1998 should fit your Sprint Sport, though there may be some slight differences to be overcome in things like airbox fitment; ancillary wiring, etc.

The Tiger 900 engine should fit OK but you would need to be sure it has ALL the ancillaries (carbs; airbox; igniters, etc.) or you might end up spending a LOT of money searching for parts to fit a model that was far less common than the alternatives. The Tiger 900 was also tuned for a completely different type of machine in that it had less power but more torque than most of the other triples in the range.

The better course would be to look for a Daytona/Sprint/Trident 900 engine - preferably complete with carbs; airbox; etc., as the characteristics will be much closer to your original machine.

Good luck with your search and the rebuild - the Sprint Sport is a rare machine and worth saving!

    Thank you for the explanation!
Finding a Sprint is very difficult. I think I have only seen 2 other models here in Greece. One belongs to my brother and one to my father!

Unfortunately my brother (blue bike) had the same problem as me. He did a full engine rebuild and after 10.000 km the camshaft gave out again. Probably a bad job by the mechanic but considering that he is 1 of 2 people that can do that job in Athens we don't have a lot of options other than buying a used engine.

I will discuss with my mechanic and see if it ls worth getting a Tiger engine. Another option is waiting until a Daytona/Sprint/Trident engine shows up but I doubt that will happen soon. That leaves me with getting an engine from another country but that can be tricky.

I will update you if I can get something done soon!

Hi Aris. If there's a Tiger engine available to you then it should fit but it really would need to have the original Tiger carbs - they're different to the Sprint. Any difference in performance to the original Daytona engine will be marginal and unimportant in day to day use.

It's very odd that both you and your brother have had engine troubles with similar bikes - the T300s are well known for being robust, reliable and capable of high mileages, and though I'm no expert, I have to say that I've never heard of camshaft failure at that mileage on a T300 before ... not to say it doesn't or can't happen but is, surely, a rare occurrence. It's an obvious question to ask but are you using good quality, 10w/40 semi-synthetic oil and decent quality filters, and changing them regularly? Hopefully you're also using the original type air filter box, though maybe with a K&N replacement filter?

It's not difficult to find fairly cheap (£1000 - £2500) used 900 Tridents here in the UK but I guess the shipping costs to Greece would make it an expensive option to purchase something like that as a 'donor'.

Let me know how you get on and if there's anything you think I can do to help.

    Good luck.
