Just got back from the UK. I was amazed how many "bikers" and I use the term loosely, came flying down the motorway in shorts and T-shirt.
Just seems crazy. I normally dont like people telling me what to do, so try not to preach. But 140 kph without any protection just seems like maddness....

Having said all that, when I started biking, jacket and helmet were the only "safe" gear. The helmet for a couple of years was a Paddy Hopkirk thing. 19 quid from Halfords. Doc Martins were the norm. Leather gloves if you could afford them.

I remember the first time we saw a guy with full leathers. We laughed at him, asked him if he had lost his way to the track. How times change....

Now that the wife has her bike, I want her to ride fully protected.
The same day I was telling her about safety and such I went out in jeans.....

Aside from nipping into town at "Scooter speeds", I always try and wear my gear. That said, I spent a year in India on an old Enfield Bullet where Crocs, gloves and sunglasses were all I tended to use. Have to say, I did love that sort of riding and it's amazing how much the desire for self preservation tames your riding down. Also, not the fastest machines either.
