    Those crazy Frenchies eh?

The current Mayor of Paris is about to pass a law banning bikes made before 2000 from the city. It's not clear from this article where the city starts and ends but in theory I guess it could mean the peripherique.

Apart from the nonsense of banning bikes in the first place they are now considering a further ban of bikes made before 2015.

Where will it end? Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, London?

Let's hope Boris is not watching.

That is absolutely crazy. Mind you I try to avoid Paris, but if they banned cars instead it would be far better.

Let's first of all get some facts on the case :

    1. The current proposition and that is all it currently is, is that motorised two wheelers 1st registered before 01.01.2000 would be banned from INSIDE the Périférique.

    2. They would be banned from Monday to Friday - so weekends and holidays are NOT included.

    3. The earliest that this restriction would come into force is mid 2016.

    4. Currently cars built today are subject to Euro 6 pollution regs; bike built before 2000 were built subject to Euro 1 regs.

    5. The issue here is one of pollution, not traffic circulation. If it was a traffic matter, all cars with less than 4 passengers would be banned from Central Paris in favour of bikes - but it's not.

This was briefly mentioned on the main news tonight but nothing specific was reported.

Looks like the ban is in place from July 1st 2015. No votes apparently as it was done by the prefecture under existing legislation to create a low-emission zone. It doesn't mention restricting it to only certain times.

While I can understand banning highly polluting vehicles it seems a nonsense to me to ban bikes that will still create less pollution than half a dozen cars.

And the plan is to restrict even more vehicles by 2020 (like bikes built before 2015).

It'll be interesting to see what (if anything) happens now.

I would never willingly drive or ride into Paris anyway (or use the peripherique come to that) but I feel sorry for the folks that have to (actually I feel sorry for anyone who has to drive or ride in any major city ;))

I went to Paris 3 yrs ago on my old fireblade , had about 3 days there riding around exploring the city & I have to say I really enjoyed myself & I wouldn't say no to doing it again , so its a shame to read this really because its something I would recommend to anyone to do

The new Mayor of Paris is trying to reduce air pollution which got so bad in 2014 that cars were banned from the centre of the city dependant on their number plate. Odd numbers only one day, even numbers the next.

To be honest whilst I don't agree, I can see the sense of this decision, which wasn't even voted on. Apparently it is within the Mayors powers, show she just said do it !!!

I think back to when I had my Bandit 1200 (2007) and it's fuel consumption. To be honest it was just dreadful! 33mpg when riding around fairly gently on A roads, so probably less in heavy traffic. Most modern small city cars can do better.

For me the problem is that modern bikes predominantly come from Japanese manufacturers and they don't seem to be motivated at all to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust/air pollution. If you consume that much fuel (33mpg) then you will pollute more.

Filling the roads with 125cc scooters will reduce pollution, but anyone who has ridden the Périférique knows that whilst there are some scooters, the vast majority are bigger engined proper bikes.

A question for all of you bike buyers : when buying your current bike how much attention was paid to it's fuel consumption and pollution characteristics, as opposed to it's looks and power?

Hang on, my BMW1150 rt had cats on as did the K1200 both did around 48 mpg and my current Honda Pan1300 has cats on and does 50 mpg so the consumption is better than most cars and the polution is possibily less as it is fitted with two cats, so I do not see a problem, but perhaps I am missing something ?

Thanks for that thebiglad, but I still can not see the relation between a 140hp diesel car (£30) tax in the uk and a motorcycle or for that matter artic lorrys doing between 8 and 10 mpg, if the French were to look at the problem in a serious way they should be banning or restricting Lorrys and petrol cars not messing about with the minor poluters i.e. motorbikes.
