Here is a pic of my Sprint taken before I bought/rescued it, it came with panniers but I haven't fitted them yet. Underneath the pillion seat, above the wheel is a hanging bracket, I believe this is some sort of pannier steady and should have some round bits either end connected with some sort of wire, this bit is missing, what does it do and do I need it? Thanks
If you don't get any answers from the esteemed members herein, I would just go sneaking around any ST that I came across to see what the set up is on them. Better still if you can find the owner to interrogate! Me??? Not a clue I'm afraid.
If it's the same as the GT then it's a bracket for a small damper rod. The panniers actually hang on the frame and passenger foot rest. The idea is there is slight movement for the panniers which helps keep the bike more steady when carrying luggage.
There should be a damper with a ball on either end that the pannier rests against. The idea is that any sideways load is passed across to the other pannier to keep them stable. https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/6832/sprint-st-from-vin-208167-/2-box-pannier-kit
I assume this question is aimed at the original posted but I thought I'd chip in anyway as mine has done 83k.
Just shows 83k is probably nowt to worry about as long as maintained correctly i am converting mine to fat bars for real comfort
