I recently acquired a rear rack for my Sprint. The bike it came off... Well, I think it A) had a hard life, or, B) it was left outside for a long while.

Anyhoo, the rack is alloy, and there is some hefty oxidisation under the paint (same as my Landy does). So, I'm in the process of getting down to clean alloy, might shot blast it yet if I get fed up with doing it the slow way, then acid etch, prime etc.

Original paint is a medium grey, and looks uncomfortably like hammershite. Is that what they used.? In fact, what did they paint them with?

The plugs that cover the Allen keys are a light grey, so it kind of limits my colour choice, it's going to have to be a grey variant. I wondered about the same green as the tank and body panels.... What do you reckon?

I personally would polish the alloy and clear coat. But I like shiny.

I'm liking that.... Think that's my way forward.

I like the thinking of @joe mc donald too, I like shiny as well, but it's pretty pitted, it's going to take some cutting back. And it would be the only shiny thing on board!

Do you think it was a hammershite type of paint originally? Or has SPOT* been busy?

Yes, I think you're probably right. It's actually in three sections, or, it would be if I could get the Allen screws undone. It's that steel/alloy thing going on. So I'm going to risk leaving it in one lump rather than shear the bloody heads off.

Might look into powder coating. Not sure who does it up here... Be a nice finish though.

Don't own a Land rover too, do you? I have actually taken a lot off with a wire wheel in the grinder ;) I have a die grinder hooked up to the compressor ready for tomorrow, with a smaller wire wheel in it to get into the fiddly bits. And some of those burrs, like the dentist (sorry, dirty word) uses.... Going to get well filthy tomorrow.

Had to stop tonight, it's cold and the electric lighting creates too many shadows to see what I'm doing properly.

@Dozers Dad I think that's the way forward, but black. Not sure if the green might clash, though hard to tell without actually trying it. Safe with black.

I guess it is the same principal as hammershite its supposed to go on bare metal, but with it being alloy it's going to need acid etching and then painting. Might get away without the primer stage using the rustins.

Aye, I've never liked hammershite, for that very reason. Though if you mix silver hammered and flat black hammershite, it kind of looks like galvo. A friend cleaned a chassis back to bare metal, and told me that he was going to do it with that nastyass metallic blue hammershite. Told him it was crap, but no. He swore by it. Yeah, you guessed it, it was a rusty heap within 12 months.

The die grinder is a bit like a dremel... Dremel tools will fit in it, so I'll use that for the fiddly bits. :)

My self not keen on hammarite if I use that kind of paint I use the rustolium But I think they are both affected with oil or petrol and peel of.

    Joe.
