Poo! Finally got to ride the trophy, took it for its MOT, it failed on a sticky calliper, went home and fixed that and an hour later passed. Hooray! Sun shining - open road here we come! 20 odd miles later oil light flickering on idle. another mile or so (heading homewards now) light coming on at idle. a little further coming on at about 1500rpm, then 2000, then 2500. Stopped for a bit. checked oil level - ok. Now back to on at idle. and repeat. The hotter it gets the higher the rpm before it goes out. Cooled down back to normal. New oil in last week, 10/40 Motul. On the max mark on the dipstick (It may be slightly over, very difficult to judge with new oil and old eyes). At the same time the Neutral light switch gave up the ghost.* So... spent the sunny afternoon in the garage. Checked for a poor earth on the engine and wiring - its not that. The engine cooled - oil light back to how it should be, off a second or two after starting, still no neutral light though. Did some googling - it seems the flickering oil light is a common thing with solutions ranging from bad switch to poor oil to buggered motor, but the motor sounds fine, a little agricultural at tickover but smooth and responsive above that. (Its only done about 8000 miles). The oil pressure switch (rear of sump) is not screwed in fully and can still be turned with a socket without too much effort but I have a feeling it may be a tapered fit? and don't want to strip anything. Ordering both switches monday to eliminate them. *just went out to the garage and the neutral light is back on and functioning as it should! So questions: 1. Anyone use Motul 5000 4T 10w40 without issues? 2. should the O.P.S be screwed all the way in or is tapered? (Haynes book of lies just says - to correct torque) 3. any suggestions for a cheap oil pressure gauge/ take off point? 4. anything obvious I'm missing? Cheers Grumpier than usual in the shed
WooHoo! That sound you heard earlier wasn't the Red Arrows passing overhead (unless you were around Swansea), it was the wave of relief coming from my garage. Along with the bike came half of its old engine and in the sump - another oil light switch, looking rusty and worse for wear but swapped them over and problem solved. Went twice as far as yesterdays shakedown, including the same route with traffic to build up some heat, and not a flicker. Happy bunny (Only one slight niggle which I'll post in a new thread to make future searching more fruitful.)
@Grumpyintheshed , I'm experiencing the same light on a 1050 speed... if you gave your bike any revs would your red light go off then flicker back on when revs dropped?
I would still buy the one on offer from Dozers Dad. I'm sure he'll throw in the calipers as well if you ask him kindly.
Referring to the oil pressure light - Yes. exactly that. started with a flicker at idle, then a while later on at idle, then worked it way up the rev range, but at all times it went out when throttle applied. Neutral light still buggered.
On the trophy theres a picture of an oil can on the red light. Unfamiliar with any other models. Dozers Dad - I'll send a message over if I can work out how to do it re the neutral switch.

Pith and bugger! Still the same But sussed it out I think. If i remove the sealing washer it works fine, i.e. it sits deeper into the engine and engages properly with the cam wotsit that pops into place when neutral is selected. The washer was a touch on the chunky side so have now swapped it for a thinner one and all seems well now. Another test drive should confirm.
