Hello everyone, brand new to this forum but also own a Triumph TR6 (car not bike) and have been a regular member of the TR Register Forum and know how helpful it is to belong to an active forum. I have had the T120R a few years now and have had problems. The bike is unrestored but in really good nick considering the age. The previous owner had fitted a Quafe clutch, spin on oil filter and Boyer electronic ignition. Major hassle a while ago when the cotter pin in the chain parted company and wrapped itself around the gearbox sprocket. Fortunately no damage done, except to the sprocket which had to be replaced. Big job for me but Lummad's videos on youtube saved the day. My major gripe is with the stands!!! The side stand leaves the bike leaning at a crazy angle and the centre stand seems to "over-toggle" with it going in my view way too far forward resulting with both wheels on the deck and it almost impossible to get it off the stand without physically lifting the bike up. Not easy on your own. My Honda Blackbird stand suits just slightly forward of centre and the front wheel on the floor with the rear just off and you are able to rock the bike see-saw like. Has anybody found a way of sorting these stand issues out or do I just live with them. I have read that a lot of ex-usa bikes suffer like this because americans tend to kickstart their bikes on the stand rather than sit astride and hence excessive wear in the bolts and opening up of the holes. How true this is of course I don't know. Anyway as a newbie any help appreciated.
Hi and welcome, hopefully somebody will be along with an answer for you soon. Might help to post some pictures which will help....
Hi n welcome bolt holes can wear on both stands as well as stands can also wear and bend, all of these issues can be rectified with bushes and/or new parts, only removing the parts will explain
Hello and welcome. Darkman is THE expert on Meridens and is absolutely spot on about the wear on stands and lugs. It's very common for sidestands to wear and you've correctly identified the most common cause, i.e. kick starting - or even sitting on - 'the bike when it's on the sidestand. As mentioned new bushes might cure it but the eye also wears/ovals and might need to be weld filled and rebored - something that would probably require engine removal. If the centre stand goes too far forwards it suggests that the lug stops are worn. A lot. It would be worth checking that the centre stand is actually the correct part - I have a feeling that the oily frame models had longer centre stand legs but I'm not at all sure about that. I have seen centre stands that have had additional "shoes" welded to the stand feet - basically a piece of shaped steel welded on to give an extra inch or so of lift - however, finding somebody and somewhere to carry out that kind of work is unlikely to be either quick or easy. Good luck and, as nobody else has mentioned it, I'll suggest you post some pics of the collection - car and bike!
Welcome to the Triumph Forum, ASL! Hope you can get your T120R's issues sorted out soon. Those darned Americans.
