I wasn't allowed one as a youngster and was steered straight on to cars. I've been building and fiddling with them ever since, but this spring decided to get a bike licence – and an old bike.

It was on eBay earlier this summer. It had stood for 20 years after being imported from the States.

I've finally got it running just about right (although the carbs are currently in bits after I put them in a mate's ultrasonic cleaner). I'm torn about leaving it basically as is, or restoring it. At the moment I'm swinging towards the former, with maybe a coat of lacquer on the tank just to keep it where it is. But I'd like to strip the engine and get it properly balanced. A mate had his apart and did this – the factory was literally throwing them together by this point, and it'd be nice to reduce the vibes a bit.

Good morning and welcome to the world of motorcycling. You have the beginnings of a great project. Whatever your decision, enjoy the ride and remember to always ride safe!

Thanks for the welcome. As for riding safe, I ride like a little old lady. I still haven't really got the measure of this biking thing, so I'm taking it easy – which isn't hard on this bike!

Welcome, but remember, it's only old once and has that patina once. Unless you fancy throwing tons of money down a bottomless hole to turn it into a trailer queen. Been there and have got the cuts, scabs, and vocabulary to prove it.

I agree. I think I'll lacquer the tank and I may well strip the engine, but I won;t be getting into any polishing.

Change the obvious, and ride it. By the way, people would pay through the nose to have a bike in that condition or at least pay someone to make it "used".

I'm away this weekend or I might have gone to that bash. I could do with a new kill switch assembly.
