Hi all, I'm about to trade in my beloved 2010 street triple R for a 2019 speed triple RS in the next week. Its bike #2 as my winter and touring bike is a BMW R1200RS, but the street is the ONLY bike I've held on to this long. I'm trying to retain the fun and telepathic nature of the street, maintain the riding comfort (most comfy bike on my back ever), but gain some midrange and be more planted and the bike be less winded on on the highways. The street has been the best bike I've ever had. Comfy, fun, easy to work on (except spark plugs) but at 30k, its showing its age and other bikes that have entered the garage have made it seem more like a toy than a true motorcycle. I do have some questions for you all: my cold feet prior to delivery: 1) new Speed a good flickable commuter and relaxed at low rpms (traffic)? 2) No major engine heat issues? and lastly - 3) my only gripe on a 2017 I tested ... do you guys find your balls sliding into the tank periodically, especially downhill canyons? seemed canted forward and i often was sliding forward or getting a mini-wedgy up front That, very vibby mirrors at 4000 rpm and a shit rear brake was the only issues I could find on my 1 hr ride. 4) Mirror vibes - or was that just this used bike? If I swap - 1) OEM Heated grips ? Warm enough, or just so-so? Honestly do not plan on using the bike in the deep cold .. I'm getting too old and have the BMW RS for that. Install ... getting quoted 2 hrs ... should I just do it myself? I hate electronics beyond plug and play, but notoriously grind through grip swaps and I don't want to screw this up or lose the warranty? Right now, just leaning to doing nothing and if needed, adding some oxfords 2) protection - you like the OEM sliders / fork protectors and radiator guard or go aftermarket (R&G , evotech) 3) any needed accessories right off ... yes, looking at tail remodels (evotech or motodynamic) and some farkley stuff (indicators) debating even the carbon fill in (though I think that's just silly - it does tend to round out the look given the other carbon bits. Any other tidbits or advice? hard getting rid of the street ... but so ready for a bit more planted highway rides, better midrange and a bike mor esuited to the 20 lbs I added to myself in the last 10 years. Hard to do with a BMW in the garage, but that's just not as fun as the street (body in late 40s, mind in 20s) and I run sooo hot, I need naked bikes once late spring hit and they suit my spirit soo much better.
Welcome aboard Warren, hope you enjoy the forum, I'm the owner of a 2015 Speed triple and love it, must be a "thing" with them as my rear brake was awful too until I had a recent overhaul, there are a few guys with the new RS on here that I'm sure will share their experiences with you and offer tips, though sliding into the tank when "heading into canyons" may not crop up often as a majority are UK based, there is also a Speed Triple thread on the forum it may be worth asking your questions on too, have fun on that new RS and stay safe.
Hi. Flickable yes Mirrors ,go bar end. Heated grips Oxford are very very good Scottish so can't answer overheat query. Although I haven't heard anything negative. Tank wedging a little, grip with the knees. Your reasoning reads spot on. Go for it.
thanks all! happy to be on board. Only recently jumped onto online forums when I bought my last BMW r1200RS (so few of us) ... met lots of great folks, shared a few stories and learned a lot, shared a lot ... looking forward to doing the same here. I'm in Utah, US. Ride mostly Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Oregon. Once the kids are off to college in a few, looking forward to longer trips and hitting canadian rockies more!
