Just got back form a very enjoyable, but VERY windy NC 500 trip.
Day 1, started with a 365 mile ride to my first hotel in Arrocar, on the way I stopped off at the Lockerbie memorial, if you're ever up that way, it's worth remembering what happened that night
    DSC04344.JPG DSC04345.JPG
The hotel I stayed in wasn't much to write home about, so I won't wast my time recommending it.
Day 2 came and I was off to Fort William, via the Green Welly shop.
    DSC04358.JPG
well I knew @Adie P was in Fort William, so I kept an eye out for him, well you can imagine I was gobsmacked to see him, if you remember I did ask him to wear a rose or something like that to help him stand out. Well I think you'll agree that he did a marvellous job too. I saw him a mile off, I did toot, but I don't know if he heard it or not.
    BIG GIRL.JPG
Having passed Fort William, I then made my way to the viaduct that's famous in the Harry Potter films, when in the car park this came in, I think they're a little bit lost.
    DSC04371.JPG
Ever onward's to the Commando Memorial
    DSC04374.JPG DSC04375.JPG
This is a new addition since the last time I came this way
    DSC04379.JPG
I was now making my way to the Hostel in Applecross https://www.hartfieldhouse.org.uk/
I can recommend this, yes it's basic, but it has all you need whilst you're on your travels. The views from Applecross are stunning, and I caught it just right too, with the weather.

There's a sign under that lot.

Ullapool. These were all taken on the phone, so they're not brilliant.

The hotel I stayed in was this one http://www.bespokehotels.com/caledonianhotel and it was just fine.
One the way to Thurso now. Well today ( Wednesday ) was forecast to be heavy rain, I had about 10 min's tops, but bye Christ the wind was something else, talk about being blown from pila to post, it was VERY VERY windy indeed

Still on the way to Thurso

I stayed at this hotel in Thurso, and it was just fine http://www.greenlandhousebandb.co.uk/ the breakfast was brilliant too, and I can well recommend this one.
The next day and I was off to see a few sights along the way, before turning the corner and making my way south again.
    IMG_20200903_100925.jpg IMG_20200903_103112.jpg IMG_20200903_110013.jpg DSC04468.jpg DSC04469.jpg DSC04470.jpg DSC04475.jpg
The rest of the trip was as to be expected going down through the Cairngorms, it was however so windy and a bit of rain too, that I just didn't stop for lots of pictures.
Overall on the trip, I had about 10 min's of rain, and 3 days of non stop high winds. But it was worth it. I did 1563 miles on the V Strom and she averaged 77 mpg.
If you're thinking of doing the 500 soon, give it some thought, it's well worth it and if you're lucky like I were, to get to Applecross in great weather it'll be a bonus. Some of the roads are in good condition, but about 80% aren't, so just go easy and enjoy the spectacular views and you'll come home a happy bunny.
The last two places that I stayed in, and can highly recommend a lot, were the following two. The first being in Inverness
https://thekemps-guesthouse.co.uk/ don't be put off by the looks, it's great inside, and you get a very nice breakfast too. The last one just south of Edinburgh was for me the best of them all https://www.ashcroftfarmhouse.com/ my God do you get a breakfast and half, the owner is 83 and she's just a great laugh. I'm going back again soon, I hope.
All being well I'll be doing the Orkney's next year. I really needed this trip, with all the crap that's been going on, it was great to just bugger off on the bike and enjoy Scotland.

Brilliant write-up and photos, Bikerman! I truly enjoyed my vicarious travels with you through these posts. The castle in particular is simply stunning to this American. Sounds like you had a terrific trip all in all, in spite of the winds. Over how many days did you do your 1563 miles? Great mileage from that V Strom! Thanks for taking the time to take photos and to post your adventures, Bikerman! :kissing_heart:

Oh, and BTW, @Adie P doesn't quite look as I pictured him. Must be those Tunnock's CARAMEL wafer biscuits. ;):joy:

@Sandi T. Did the trip over 6 days. The castle is where the film Highlander was filmed Eilean Donan, by the Kyle of Lochalsh.

    Hey @Bikerman .....

SO glad you managed to get my better side! The tat on my other thigh isn't quite finished yet so it doesn't look quite so good! I must get those Tony Llama's fixed up. As you can see I had my earbuds in and was just searching for some bangin' toons to which I could shake my booty for all the big, bad biker boys at the Green Welly so forgive me for missing your attempt to give me the horn ..... think that's what I mean?

On a (slightly) more serious note - that's a great write-up, nice pics and some useful information about the NC500! It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, though I suspect it will be a solo adventure for me if it is to happen at all.

Great pictures, thanks. :) Looks like you had some decent weather, always a bonus. Don't think me and Mrs mouse will be as lucky on that front when we head up in a few days...

Forgot to mention that I got this T Shirt, and the stickers from the hotel I stayed in, in Ullapool. £15 fort the T Shirt, and £2.50 each for the stickers.
It was the only place I saw that sold these.
And here's the T Shirt and stickers.
Also thinking about it, I might not have been too impresed with the first hotel I stayed in, but that's just me. Some others may like it, so here's where I stayed on the first night. https://www.bespokehotels.com/arrocharhotel

I do hope that you are, I'm not trying to tell you how to ride, but some of the blind bends that I came across, were just that. You had to get to the top to find out if the drop went left, right, or just straight on. But as I've said it's all worth it. Have a great, and enjoyable trip, and I'll look forward to some great pictures.

Thanks :) I did the Highlands for the first time last year with a couple of mates, so know what to expect road wise. And when riding more locally I'm always taking the back lanes and often single track roads, so naturally ride as though I'm going to meet a tractor/horse/bicycle peloton/gravel patch around every corner ;)
