I'll have to ask him the next time we meet up. I have no idea, but at a guess early 70s as the gear change and brake lever are the wrong way round, maybe @darkman would know.
    P. S. Just emailed him the question.

I have never seen one in the flesh but a very sought after bike as low numbers, 72-73 i believe for production in yellow then red is about all i know Bikerman :) although 650's changed the gear lever over to LH the 500's never did before there demise.

You really do know your bikes, not that anyone would ever doubt it, especially me.
My mates got back in touch, and it's a 1973 model. He restores lots of bikes, and almost always comes round on a different bike every time. Here's a Norton that he built last year.
    This now lives in Poland

He built this Triton, which now lives in Italy.

Here are a few more. You'll notice the Trophy Trail again. I didn't post this picture at first, as when I googled the street name, low and behold, it was right outside my house, so found a fuzzy picture programme on the computer and played around a bit. So here are some more.

All very nice bikes, I’d happily have any, or all of em in my garage. Your mate clearly has an eye for a good looking bike and the skill to make it.

Your neighbor in the bungalow across the road has let his bushes get unwieldy in the last shot :)
