I posted a few weeks back in the noob section about a 900 Trophy project I was starting. Since then I've come across a Mk1 Speedy with a blown motor. The guy had already started to break it so I dont have a complete bike that needs an engine swap/rebuild. I have a sorned frame swing arm and front forks plus most of the other bits unique to the ST. All I have to do is rebuild it and source a couple of bits and I'm in business. Simple right?! First job is to drop the lump out of my Trophy as it needs painting black, this was what I spent yesterday after work doing. I'm hoping to keep the project rolling so thought I'd stick a thread here to help maintain enthusiasm. q
Ok. So today's job after work was stripping down the rest of the Trophy frame. Jobs for the long weekend are 1 -degreasing, cleaning and prepping the engine for paint which I'm looking forward to as I can do it with a couple of beers and the radio on. 2 - sitting down with the wiring loom, which someone has been tinkering with, a battery and the multi metre. Not looking forward to this one as I hate electrics so it'll be beer and radio free so I can concentrate! Then I'm ready to start cleaning up and building up the ST frame. Get it rolling on its wheels.
Evening. Hope you all had a good Easter break. Weather was cracking so didn't get as much time in the garage as I'd planned but I did get the engine prepped for paint. Sadly I ordered PJ1 online to save a couple of quid and it hasn't arrived yet On the up side i was missing the ST top yoke which was a pain cos I need it to mount the clocks. Turns out they're like rocking horse but they're still available new from World of Triumph. Happy Days. Posty brought me this today
Wooooooo, I bet that was expensive mate, welcome to the world of Triumph I will enjoy seeing the progress, and good luck.
ok ok I'm not sure I can handle the pressure Ron! To be honest mate I'm at the boring stage of any build when all I have is a massive pile of bits and a lot of prep work to do!! Going to try and make some time after work today to start painting the engine, there will be pictures I promise
Morning. A late in the garage but the engine got painted. Hopefully this will keep you going for today Ron!
quick update on things in the garage and a couple of photos for my mate Ron Engine is all back together and the all important silver highlights in place. I'm still waiting on the new bolt set but I think they can wait until the lump is back in the frame.
I'm going to use a 3:1 exhaust so I've rejetted the carbs and needed it to breath a bit better. I don't want to deviate too much from original so I'm using half of the original air box with a new front made from a bit of sheet steel and a bit of perforated sheet u had lying about. Gonna stick a K&N filter in there.
Was hoping to get a bit more done this weekend but my better half had a DIY list for me to do. These 2 made me walk to the pub too!
Cheers Andy and everyone for the likes and encouragement. I'll try and crack on a bit so you've got something apart from engine photos to look at!
So I've been busy cleaning and tidying up the frame ready to start putting things back together, the frame is ok, the powder coating on these things is brilliant. Sadly the last owner was a proper dirty/lazy b*****d and the swing arm is proper caked in old chain lube, I had to put the pressure washer on to clean it enough for the degreaser!
And then I wished I hadn't! This really ruined my day What sort of head runs a chain so slack it starts to eat the swing arm!? The photo doesn't really show just how deep the groove is that the chain has worn. I think I need a replacement. Anybody got one in their shed?
