A friend of mine has just passed his test at the age of 61, and is looking at a Honda 1000cc 2004 bike with 58000 miles on the clock, personally I think it's a little bit too high for me ,but I'm no expert. what do you guys think.
Does sound like quite a lot of mileage. However if it has a full service history it might well be fine..... Wessa
I would guess it’s not going to be a lot of money, so if it doesn’t work out he shouldn’t loose too much reselling it.
Just over 4000 miles per year isn't exactly thrashing it. If it's been well looked after all should be okay. It IS a Honda after all. However, when buying a bike of that age then it is, quite obviously, a high mileage bag of shite and the price should reflect that fact. If you are selling it, then it is obviously a well cared for gem of a bike and worth 'top dollar'. You choose!
What bike is it? If it's a sports bike, ragged for 58k yes high mileage, but not maybe for a tourer going easy for all them miles. Depends on model as well as service history.
David Cooper. I just serviced a f1 model for a friend at work. The starter motor had blown. What a job getting it out. It had just under 90 thou on the clock. I rode it back home for him about 10 miles. You know it purred like a kitten and felt good. Ride Safe Joe.
I would want a lot of history with the bike, or you will need to do, every bearing , every bush, all fluids, and check all the rubbers ,o rings, valves. Nothing against the millage ,I would just need to know what had been checked and serviced.
According to my mate, it's been fully serviced by the one owner bike enthusiast, and it's been used and never stored, I'm not sure of the model but he said it's not the fast version, I only see him at work, so I'll give him your comments on Monday, Thanks very much to all of you.
What 1000 were honda making in 2004? I could only see Blades and Firestorms - As a first bike for a 61 year old ??? Maybe a good bike but not a great first bike, either of them. Imho.
I tried to talk him into getting a Triumph, he wanted a Harley at first, at least I managed to talk him out of that idea.
I’ve got a pal with a 2000 model VFR800 with 243000 miles on it and he rarely changes the oil. Out of all the manufacturers Honda do tend to over engineer everything, high mileage on one would worry me a lot less than if it was a Duke or Aprilla not that I’m saying they’re unreliable
My mate has a 1000 Varedaro, what a JPOS! Nought but trouble since he bought it, I would have got shot after 1st summer, but he thinks he's solved all the problems, then something else goes wrong. Always smokes out of one exhaust, can smell oil when following. Like it since he got it. They are a big heavy bike.
I have a mate with a Tuono with 57000km’s on, not using a drop of oil, not leaking oil and an exhaust that burns a creamy white colour inside, he trashes this thing whenever he’s on it. Only thing he complaints about now and then is some warning light constantly going on. Here’s what I know, he changes oil and filter every 5000km’ or less, stick to service intervals apart from the oil changes and takes it easy when it’s not at operating temperature. Is he lucky, I don’t know. I have been asking myself this even looking at used vehicles. Is mileage just a no and can it be over looked when service history is in place and one can see it has been looked after....
I had a cbr600f with 50,000 miles on when I bought it and it ran as sweet as a nut. No problems whatsoever, it had been looked after. If you can get someone to check it over, all bearings, no bad noises, no smoking when warm etc, someone who knows what they're doing, your mate could get a good buy.
We raced a 2004 RSV4 every six months throttle bodies needed to be re calibrated or it ran like dog shite, but I’m not saying they’re unreliable
