On my 2005 speed triple I have LED headlights fitted. I noticed recently that the low beam wasn't working properly. When I switched the ignition on they would work, once I started the engine they would cut out. Now they won't come on at all. I suspected the LED's even though both lights were affected, so I tried one of the old H4 bulbs. Same result, no low beam. So I would think not the LED's. I checked the fuse - that's fine. High beam no problem. Any ideas?
Check your wiring going into the headlight casing and round the headstock, sounds like loose connection or chafed wiring. Get one of those thingys that beep when the probes are touched together, or was that brokeback mountain?
Run a separate earth wire from a known good source (direct from battery negative?) using a slave wire into the headlight shell and retest? Sounds like the earth is dropping out to me.
Vulpes Yes I would try the light connections sometimes the old solder bits wear and don't touch properly. Also try the switch the contact there could have corroded. Regards Joe.
Well, I tried a separate earth straight from the battery. No joy. Having conferred with the dealer I now suspect a faulty relay. Funny thing - when I gave them the framenumber to check which partnumber I need, they said "oh, it's an electric blue one imported from Britain". Funnily enough it's white, and has Phil Read's autograph on the fueltank. So obviously the previous owner did a lot of work on her. Relay ordered, I'll keep you posted.
@Vulpes Do keep us posted, as I had this last time I rode mine a couple of months ago...(I have been riding a winter hack due to salt n' shit on the road) With my LED lights, I would flash high beam or use the switch, and when returning to dipped, they would take a few seconds to come on, there was a very little light but not the full light So I suspect the relay, and may well order one depending on your success
By the way, the partnumber for mine, which is a 2005, is T2502109. IIRC yours is a 2010, so might be different.
A relay is a relay ! It's only the pin configuration and whether it's a 'normally open' or 'normally closed' that differs. Open requires a trigger to close the points , which switches on the light/device . Closed is normally ON and trigger turns light/device off !!! Any relay that matches the original ie - performs in the desired manner will be fit for purpose , just ensure the amperage rating meets the draw rating . You can get relays from any Auto parts shop , minimum recommended rating for single light 15 amp and double for twins. Cars and trucks use same relays for the same job ! Genuine Vehicle parts cost more because they come in better packaging with the relevant Company Logo !
Started the beast up yesterday and had a play with her buttons I was flipping her high beams on and off while I had a finger resting on her solenoid, and I can feel it twitching each time the high beams flashed and returned to dipped. This time there was no delay though...unfortunately there was a significant amount of smoke from under the engine...seems I have some lubricant leaking again, so will need to get on my hands and knees to sort out her loose sump again.
No update yet, as they sent me the wrong relay... to be continued... good luck with finding your leak!
@Red Thunder problem sorted mate. A new relay did the trick. Disregard the partnumber I previously stated - the stealers gave me the wrong one. It's the Hella one pictured below.
@Vulpes many thanks chap. Had issues yesterday when it took 5 secs of driving in the dark for the dipped beam to come back on.... Is that: 12v 20/40A 4RD 933 332 40 Edit: Just searched Amazon and found it...cheers again
I paid $15 for a relay from a dear as poison car parts trader ! That's around £7•50 it wasn't HELLA and rated at 12v 40a , will do the job as high beam relay max 15amp draw !
Looking at the Amazon search results and they are different codes Searched eBay and local parts trader and none have them Will keep looking 4rd 933 332-040 hella
I put up with the temperamental relay until now (was causing headlights to fail when I pressed the high beam) I popped into Halfords with the iffy one in hand. Found and picked the five pin 30A relay off the shelf. I had my daughter (18yo) with me and she wandered off while I was looking. She appeared again at the till with a travel cushion and car smelly thing with puppy eyes asking me to buy them, i'm a big softy so of course I do. Handed the cushion thing to the cashier bloke who scanned it while I placed the relay and smelly thing on the counter, I then fumble for the trade card (thanks Rob) for my pennies discount. When I paid I thought that was a good discount, total came out £2 quid cheaper than the cushion by itself! Wasn't till l I got home I realised the bloke hadn't scanned the relay or smelly thing, I didn't feel too guilty though I think my daughters neon green hair and face piercings distracted him! Put the relay in this morning and it worked so will see if the problem has been fixed in the long run
