Loose Right Footrest

    ...once again, the right side footrest is loose. I’m getting fed up with this.

    I was wondering about rearsets anyway....

    Have you tried reinstalling it using Locktite on the fixings ?

    I’ve been in the garage this afternoon doing that, and putting more loctite on the threads.

    Both hinged footrests felt sloppy in their clamps, so I’ve fitted a spring washer and a thin flat washer between footrest and clamp on the right side, and a spring washer on the left side. Footrests still pivot, and are much more secure.

    A quick gallop around my favourite “test circuit” of back roads and a short section of the A1, and they feel much better; the handling feels better too, presumably because the feedback through my feet is more direct.

    Whether this will cure the loose forest issue, remains to be seen; but I would hardly be surprised if the footrests vibrating in their clamps, contributed to the problem.

    That's a strange recurring problem if you are using threadlock.
    Are you sure the footrest alignment peg is correctly located in the footrest carrier ?
    Torque setting 17Nm

    Footrest seems to be aligned properly, I don’t see any sign of a misaligned guide peg or anything of that sort. I suspect that either the footrest loose in its clamp is the problem, or possibly the thread on the peg itself is worn from the problem recurring over time, with the PO

    Fact is, the PO spent around £1000 on this bike (centre stand, Dunstall silencers, remap and dynamometer setup) then traded it in after 2000 miles in 2 years. Somehow a persistent, niggling problem like this seems like just the sort of reason he might have done that.

    If it persists, I’ll take the footrest off and fit a generic aftermarket peg, with a nyloc nut and a spring washer. Doesn’t look a difficult swap.

    Actually I wouldn’t........

    You would be better off drilling out the 2 locating studs/dowels on each peg base and replacing them with M6x15mm high tensile Allen screws with nylocs.

    The strength of the footrest is in the clamping action that prevents the single central M8 stud getting bent. If they are getting loose then there is an issue with that main M8 thread. Belt and braces and cheap!

    Yeah, I’m not going to mess about like that. I’ve used generic, cheapo “pillion footrests” on various bikes over the years, including a “shake your fillings out” 1000cc iron Sportster and an A65 BSA green lanes bike.

    There’s no excuse for problems of this sort. My 883cc Sportster Flat Track bike has “cheap junk” footrests which give zero issues...

    That, or I’ll try some rearsets, which I quite fancy anyway.

    Your choice but most of the generic pegs use the OEM carrier which is known to be weak if not snugged up tight.

    Seriously, I did my time on sorting out junk from Meriden and Small Heath, back in the 70s. I’m not even going to START down that path again.

    So, the refitted footrests seem to be a great improvement. It’s important to check the pegs are down before riding off, because they now stay at whatever angle you put them.... so if they were swung up for clearance in the garage, that’s where they’ll be... but it greatly improves the whole feel of the bike, and the iffy feel at the back, on less-than-perfect roads or if it’s a bit wet, seems to be gone.

    Time for some Hagons on the back, I think..
