Hi all, been on biker forums most of my life, but only in the last 5 years have I moved to the cruiser / custom genre, really only since I moved back from New Zealand to the UK. I bought a very tired 2004 790 (carb) speedy on the net unseen, it was a project so worth a risk. Transformed it into a dark bobber through many, many mods. Mods: Cocktail Shakers, Custom baffle insert pipes wrapped in 3 layers of glass, Powder coated front end and wheels, 412 11.5" shocks, AI removal kit, New chain / sprockets (17front), Old solo seat recovered with pleats, Bobbed & painted glass fibre rear fender, New indicators / rear tail light / number plate, New risers, flat bars & Triumph mirrors, Removed - engine bars / chain guard, rear foot rests, speedo, tacho, Added new small speedo into tacho hole, painted console, Wrapped exhaust with kevlar wrap, added headlight peak, New K&N, new brake lines all round, Triumph Passenger foot peg delete kick-plates, Thumbscrew pilot jets, Front and rear Maxxis white wall tyres, rear 170/80 -15, fronts 120/90-18 Front guard mount mod to raise by 2cm, front guard trimmed lip for larger circ. tyre
Thanks everyone for you kind comments, apart from the the exhaust guard I have also decided to change the mirrors over to the bar end variety. I was nearly knocked off yesterday by a hooligan in a Subaru STI, the right hand mirror (aftermarket Triumph Speedmaster ones) being behind the master cyclinder, gives poor visability past my shoulder. The nutter in the scooby overtook me over a hill crest around a left hand bend, something I was not expecting, and wouldn't have attempted even on my fireblade! I couldn't see him attempt this due to the lack of visability in the right mirror, unfortunately a truck was coming the other way and I had to swerve to let him back across nearly dropping the speedy. So I have ordered a bar end type that can go straight out, over or under the bars, will post some photos once fitted.
Have changed the bar raisers to 1.5" shorter ones and shorter bars so I could move to bar need mirrors. Looks much meaner now, and far better visability.
Hi there, initially I had these risers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261881714889?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT But I found they were just a tad too high and back, so I went back to the original speedmaster risers that are on in the pics above, just powder-coated, they are just the stock 5" triumph ones and put the new bars in the right place for me. The bars are 1" drag bars from Metric Cruisers, I cut off 2" each end to allow for bar end mirrors as they are quite wide! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-inch-25...ke-Handlebar-Drag-Bars-55-208B-/111994056258? ebay shop: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Metric-Motorcycles or their web site: www.metriccruisers.co.uk
Update - I am taking to Pete Waldron at PJ Glassfibre to get a different much shorter front fender to fit over the larger tyres size. Pete is a great guy, he has tried mocking up his short Thunderbird fender on a speedmaster with a large 120 series tyre. He is now having some brackets made up to accommodate the tyre (quite a normal mod now) to fit this smaller fender, apparently this thunderbird fender does fit stock Amercia's and Speedys if you are interested? As soon as he has sorted the fit out I will get one ordered, still might trim it a bit, paint it myself and then fit it. http://www.pjglassfibre.com
Well its finally done, after a couple of paint fails where the temperature was a bit too low, the new PJ glassfibre thunderbird fender with modified brackets is on! Big thanks to Pete at PJ for making this for me, awesome service, the brackets were spot on and it only took 10 mins to fit! Clearance is now perfect and the guards are small but still good for catching crap.....
