Actually I’m pretty excited to announce the purchase of Cyril. I pick him up first week of October. He was imported from France, is 5 years old but only has 14000kms on the clock which is less than 10000 miles. I had a drive this morning which was scary at first but I soon got used to him. He was built in Germany by Burstner.
So I’ll be saying good bye to my posh BMW which is being traded in.

    VERY smart Nikki! :grinning:

Why does owning a camper van make you & "Old Gimmer"?

Mrs DD has been banging on about getting a camper for the last few months. I'm currently winning the battle to not get one. But not sure I can hold out much longer? o_O

A ha ha...a white maggot in our mists. We had one in NZ and really liked it Nikki so you'll love yours. We'd have one if we had somewhere to store it. Is it based on the Fiat Ducato platform? Which engine and gearbox does it have?

They are great, bank holiday weekend went off "wild" camping for a few days in out of the way places. We had the places to ourselves and a real sense of freedom.

The expense on purchasing is a bit eye watering and the running costs aren't cheap but they are a great thing.
One problem is do you want/need a smaller length i.e. cheaper ferries, easier to find a suitable parking space, less intimidating to drive....

    Or
A bigger one with fixed bed, loads of storage etc.

Best advice before considering purchasing would be to hire one first, for at least a week, to see if it suits and ticks your box ;)

    Correct!
I just can't see us using it enough to justify its existence/upkeep?

Just looked up Nikki's new toy on YouTube.
    Very, very flash indeed :grinning:...

I won't be showing Mrs DD that video! o_O

Just tell her the shower's too small for you to fit into so it's a no go ;)

It did look pretty small for proper sized adults didn't it? o_O
You'd be fine in there Von Smallhausen. In fact you'd have to fit one of those OAP rails to hold on to. So the water pressure couldn't blow you out of the shower door! :p

Well I actually am already an old Gimmer. I’ve wanted one for years and I want to do even more travelling and having the van gives me enormous flexibility. Just got to persuade the cats it was a good idea !!!

It’s on a Fiat Ducato 130 with manual transmission. Steering is lovely and light and it drives like a new one. It has leather seats inside, a solar panel and satellite dish. First trip in it will be either Germany or South Western France.

Ok I will, but only if you can assure me I can buy one of those snazzy machines for £2k?
I've told her that's our (her) budget

In an attempt to put her off. I said I liked the look of this. Thinking she'd turn her nose up at the idea?..

    I was wrong!
Apparently she's been to a silent disco & loved it
I got as far as asking @Rudeboy if he'd seen it around? As it's local to him. Apparently, it looks ok in the flesh?

Then didn't mention it to her-indoors again. Until the auction had ended at more than £2k :)

    Edit...
Before anyone feels the need to point out that I'll never find a half decent camper for £2k.
Yeah, I know! Setting that crazy low budget is all part of my cunning plan not to have one

I was surprised when I got our hire one just how nice it was to drive compared to my dad's VW T5 camper which felt (unsurprisingly) just like a van. The manual should suit it well-we had an auto which TBH although easy to drive on the open flat roads was a PITA at other times in full auto as it would change up too quickly, then change down because it wouldn't pull the higher gear, then change up etc so I used to drive it in manual most of the time then it was fine. They're great if the weather is bad especially if you have the electric hook up connected as you can just stay nice and warm with all the creature comforts. It might be worth you getting a second foul water cassette at some time as we found that to be the limiting factor when wild camping as that would fill up before the fresh water ran out.

Is it a 5 or 6 speed box?
If a 5 then dont slug fifth gear down to low revs as the box is a known weakness. All will be fine if you keep the revs up :p

Congrats on the camper, driving takes a bit to get used to. My first 40-50 miles was through Los Angeles. Then I pulled over and had a cigarette. Whew. Weight is your enemy. Mine only has a four speed automatic.
