  1. Jake's Ride to Julian, CA
    Hi All;

    Last weekend, February 20th, I had a ride to Julian, California with my son, son-in-law, 2 grandsons and friend Ed. We left on Friday from Anaheim and rode across the 91 Freeway to the 15 Fwy to the country road to Julian where we had lunch. No Apple Pie though as the lunch was more then enough to fill the void, even for the 20 year old grandsons.

    The return ride took us down to Escondido and back to the 15 Fwy north. Big mistake, as we were involved with the Friday afternoon commuter traffic as well as the start of the three day Presidents Holiday Weekend getting out of town traffic. It took us 2hours to cover 43 miles, just south of the 91 Fwy.

    From there the traffic flow was 70 to 75 mph to the Euclid Ave off ramp, then cross town traffic to home.

    I'm from the Central California area and haven't ridden in traffic like that since I retired and moved to the Sierra Nevada Foothills. The reason for the ride was my youngest grandson is getting married in March and joining The Marines in April so we wanted a family ride before those events.

    Even with all the traffic we had a wonderful time and ride which may never happen again.

    The next day Saturday we all rode to Ojai for the day. Another great ride. Our rides consisted of 3 Yamaha Viragos, 1 Honda Fury, 1 Honda CTX1300 and my 2012 Triumph T100 Bonneville.

    I'm hoping I get to do another ride in So Cal with my family in the near future, except one grandson who will be in The Marine Corp Boot Camp at Pendleton.

    Hi Jake and welcome. If you want to post pics on here can I suggest you do it directly rather than via another forum. I tried to see your bike but I need to be a member of New Bonneville forum in the good ol' US of A.

  3. Sorry about that.
    Jake is the grandson who is getting married and joining the Marines. I'm Brent.
    Here are a couple pictures of my T100.

    Guessing the weather for riding is better for you guys than over here. Nice to have three generations all able to enjoy riding together. Good luck to your grandson in the marines.

  6. Thank you Richard. The Marines are a tough bunch but Jake has been working out for the past year as he knew he wanted to join since the 10th grade. He should do just fine.
    The weather was over cast on both ride days but the ambient temps were in the low 70's F so we were quite comfortable.

    Biglad, the Bonneville is a khaki green and silver with gold pin stripping on the gas tank and gloss black elsewhere.
    The bike, which is the 110 anniversary edition, is of course air cooled but handled the traffic very well with no over heating issues. Of course it was only in the 70's. Might have been different out in the Desert during Summer months.

    Thanks for that Brent, she does look nice. Re the temperature versus air-cooled comments; I've ridden mine in temps nearer to 38°C (about 100°f) for long periods including traffic without any ill effects at all.

    Hi Brent
    Welcome to the forum, sounds like a great ride out, so nice to do it with family!

  10. Hi Dave;
    Thanks for the info re: the temps that you've ridden your bike in.
    I was going to ride my 07 Bandit as it's liquid cooled but I think I'll ride the Bonneville as it's more fun.

    Steve and crispey, thank you for the welcome.

    Hi mate, funnily enough I had a 2007 Bandit 1200 before my Bonny. Obviously it was loads more powerful but it had no soul at all.

    The Bonny however is packed with the stuff !!!!

    PS Re riding the Bonny in hot weather: at the beginning of each riding season the bike gets a full service including oil and filter change. I use motorbike specific engine oil and I use a 10-60.

    Cheers
    Dave

  12. Hi Dave;
    You are right about the Bandit, as it's a bland bike but lots of power. I haven't done anything to it so it's still stock, can't hear the exhaust at all. I didn't want to change anything as the bike runs so good and I haven't had one problem in over 44,000 miles.
    Before "Jake's Ride" I changed oil, filter, cleaned, lubed and adjusted the chain. I only use motorcycle specific oil.
    The picture is the Bandit by the Kings River at Kirch Flat Campground in Central California.
    Cheers
    Brent

    " Aaaaah Central California",:):D it has such a nice ring to it !

  14. Here's two pictures. One is of Yosemite Valley with El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridal Veil Falls, the second is another picture of the Bandit and the reason exhaust noise can't be heard.
