Ok, so recently this has happened twice, I have ridden through town (5 minutes @ 30mph) and when stopped, the bike is completely dead and I've had to bump.

Yesterday I went for a fair ride, 40 miles or so, and turned her off a few times and it started no worries. When returning back to town (another 5 minutes at slow speed), I had heated grips running, and also some separate 'powerful' lights it has fitted.

When I'd got home and turned it off, I went out 10 minutes later to tuck her up and it was completely dead again!

So my question - is this a fault, semi-knackered battery, or am I drawing too much power off these gadgets, therefore using more than I can gain?
I have never had or used any 'mod cons' such as heated grips so I am a complete noob on this matter!

    P.S - Tiger 955i if this makes a difference
    Thanks :)

Check the voltage on your battery. Give it a good charge. Check it, take it for a run check it, start it and check it's charging over 3000 revs should bring you between 13&14 volts with oand without accessorys on and work from there.

Hi Phil heated grips take a fair bit of power, plus if you have lights on additional to the std. bike lights, you'll be drawing a fair bit of current.

I keep my Tiger on charge almost permanently (when I'm not riding her of course) to avoid any battery worries, do you have an intelligent charger you could leave on her?

    I have similar issues.
I have been on my 1 hr commute, stalled at lights and suddenly not enough voltage to start again.
Yet, 5 min later I park the bike and leave it for the day. When I head home the battery has 'recovered' and starts up no problem.

Please can you confirm the make of battery you have?

I have a Motobatt which has a higher CCA butI think the actual stored juice is lower!
So it is low when in use and then when left a while it sorts itself out/normalises and it's okay.

    Check:
    (a) voltage before starting lights off
    (b) before starting lights on
    (c) at tick over
    (d) at above 3k revs.

If (b) - (a) = voltage draw - the voltage use when the lights are on but ignition is off is greater than the voltage when (d) - (a) = charged voltage is above 3k revs to then maybe not enough charge is getting through.

I have totally made the above up but it may indicate a difference between what is being used and what is being charged.

I will have to check this myself actually although all he electrics are standard on my bike.

Try going for a ride then disconnecting the reg/rec when you get back

    Leave it a bit

Reconnect reg/rec and see if it still has life

I had one go pear shaped and sucked the life out the battery when not running

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I will test the battery later tonight if I get chance (and let you know the make) & voltage etc.
I have a trickle charge which I will also use from now on as it's getting cold and she's outside.

    Thanks again!
