    Hi Folks,

I've just seen this on the BBC news app...

BBC News - Coronavirus: Northern Italy to 'quarantine 16 million people' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-51787238

Placing 16m people in quarantine seems a little excessive. If it's genuinely only the same as a bad case of the flu.

Complete Bolox. The media making a mountain out of shit and causing panic.
They should be bloody ashamed and act like adults, but drama sells as this fiasco shows.
    So many sheep.

Well it’s easy to scoff, but what’s happened in China shows that while it may be something and nothing for many of us it is likely to overwhelm the health service here as elsewhere for a period, for several reasons:

1 It seems to be more infectious than normal seasonal viruses, perhaps because it takes a while to develop symptoms

2 For some (significant numbers) it causes severe, life threatening respiratory problems, and health services are likely to have insufficient beds and respirators. Hence in Wuhan, even after they miraculously built that new hospital over a weekend, they were still overwhelmed and many seriously ill people were left to their own devices.

Understandably governments are taking this seriously.

Pity they are not taking it seriously enough to get the 50,000 new nurses in like Billy liar Johnson promised

    Oh the shame

    I agree with Figwold.

This is NOT flu and nor is it comparable. It is not the Black Death either BUT there is a mass of misinformation peddled by plenty of people who do not know the difference between a bacterium and a virus. They also think pneumonia is a specific disease rather than a lung infection of multiple possible causes.

I am no clinician but I can see we have a highly infectious bug that causes coughs and fever but in some people - randomly with the elderly more susceptible - it causes an overwhelming pneumonia for which there is no drug treatment and where a ventilator may not be enough. With expected rates of acute infection there may well then be insufficient ventilators and the people who know how to use them.

The single most important thing for us to do is to break the chain of infection and slow down the spread. Face touching, hand cleanliness and avoiding crowds. The more concurrent cases there are, the more overwhelmed the NHS will be.

Put it this way - my wife is a hugely experienced nurse, steady under fire and an infection control trainer. She is pretty spooked.

My wife is a senior staff nurse as is my son and daughter in law , my daughter is a midwife and I don't want to sound political but they are also very worried , and they say the reason why we may struggle with this is the Glorious jewel that is the NHS is woefully underfunded and has been through austerity for an entire decade hence " insufficient ventilators and the people who know how to use them "

I've Googled it & apparently that's one of the early symptoms Callumity!

Unfortunately, the onset of the other symptoms. Including becoming extra pedantic, sarcastic, argumentative & generally a bit of a [email protected] Will be much harder to spot in your case  :p

In fact, think we could both be carriers ;)

In that case Covid-19 has been around for much longer than we are being told about, as you’ve had it for years...

You could be right there mate?
If so, the way to keep the virus firmly in its place. Is to exude Irish whiskey from the pores of your skin :yum
Never mind nicking hand sanitizer from the NHS. Just get yourself to any reputable off licence :grinning:

That info has gotta be worth an OBE. Possible even a knighthood? :)

    Yours insincerely

Just got back from Morrisons. The tinned fruit isle is almost empty, not much bread left and there were so many people grabbing dried pasta it was ridiculous.
