It's a good idea to do it somewhere scenic when it's warm and sunny

Northern Spain is a joy. Brilliant roads, incredible scenery, interesting towns and relatively cheap as it's not a tourist hot spot.

Cantabria is breathtaking. Not as high as the Alps or Pyrenees perhaps but equally dramatic and, I feel, more accessible.

The photo is the Los Tornos pass on the N629 to Laredo from a village called Bercedo. The descent was amazing, well surfaced, smooth roads that twisted and turned like a snake on heat.

Is it any where near the Picos de Europa? Apparently it's brilliant riding round there.

Cantabria Dave, to the north east of the Picos. Much overlooked and for my money better than the Picos :)

Check out Los Tornos pass on the N629 on Google Earth. The whole of Cantabria seems like that.

    Thanks for the info.
It looks like we're heading for the Picos & surrounding area next year.

We were in Burgos on Thursday. Couldn't take in the cathedral as we had the dog with us but it and the museums were recommended by my mate.

There's a big statue of the Cid himself there and it's full of pilgrims walking to Santiago (although I have to say I was a little suspicious of those that looked to have back packs just about big enough for a day's stroll rather than a 6 week trek).

Casa Zalama is useful distance from Bilbao/Santander if you're taking the ferry. It also makes a good stopover on the way to the Picos. It's worth staying a couple of days to experience the roads around there though.

    Cheers

    Dick
