I'm thinking about buying a hoodie that I can use for short trips on the bike. I went down into town on the bike yesterday (less than 4 miles) to pick up a takeaway and its a PITA to wear my heavy leather jacket or textile waterproof gear just for a short journey. Many hoodies are now advertised with elbow, shoulder and back protection. I was wondering if anyone here has got one and how to they find it?
My son actually has one of those lumberjack shirts you mentioned DD, he uses it a lot on his bike when the weather is hot. I guess the hoodies are just a variation on the same theme. I suspect the hood itself could be a pain if it starts flapping around Perhaps if someone makes one with a hood that is detachable or folds into a zip pocket when riding the bike that could be the type I'd opt for.
I put the hood on the inside if riding at speed or long distance, but I don’t think armour would stay in place at speed, without straps. Haven’t used it much, but was perfect for summer evenings, especially with stops as you can simply unzip
Try a mesh jacket, one hell of a lot lighter than textile or leather has armour and loads of ventilation
Thanks.......just trying to get a steer on most popular/best. I'll take a trip to J&S and see what's what.
Got mine from J&S for around £100, It’s been the best money I’ve spent considering the latest weather. It’s a Frank Thomas one,
Here in the US, I have a couple items from a company called Street and Steel. I went to a local business called Cycle Gear, but I’m pretty sure you can go through Amazon and eBay to find something. Here’s a link through Cycle Gear to view their products https://www.cyclegear.com/gear/street-steel-kickstarter-moto-hoody
I’ve just bought a Dainese mesh jacket from J&S for the warm weather. It’s textile and armoured but really light, and a great fit for me. A bit pricey but they do cheaper alternatives. https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/buy/dainese-air-frame-d1-jacket-black-yellow/35102.htm
I am confused about what a mesh jacket is. I always thought it was a version of the Knox that you wear as a base layer, that you would wear under an regular clothes, like a hoodie, but some look like a normal jacket?
The Dainese one I’ve bought is like a normal jacket but with mesh panels front and back and on the insides of the arms to allow airflow through it. It’s not mesh all over like the Knox one which is made to just hold the armouring in place under a regular jacket.
Bought a Furygan heavyweight hoodie from J&S. Quilted and armoured (no back protector supplied) Made the similar alpinestars equivalent look pretty poor VFM in comparo. Love it. I have the armour out and use under my jacket. https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/buy/furygan-luxio-jacket-black/39811.htm
