Good day all, I own a 2008 Speedy and recently I have been having cold start problems. The battery seems fine. I turn the ignition on and wait for her to wake up (all that weird and wonderful clicking and buzzing stops) I pull in the clutch and hold down the little red button ..................she cranks over four or five times and then suddenly makes a whining noise which sounds like the end of an air raid siren (hard to explain) I need to allow her to go through that start up process again. Click..........Buzz.........and then the same. I manage to get her started by adding a tiny bit of throttle and up she goes. I ride to work. Then in the evening it doesn't seem to have any problem until the next day (the same again for about a week now) I checked the battery and its fine. Even keep it on trickle charge.................. Any ideas please? I recently had the Valve Clearance and Throttle bodies checked (which were spot on) She's at 32k now but very well looked after Thanks for you time gents (and ladies of course) Nick
Nick I take it you did the plugs aswel. Get the choke adjusted or checked again. And if a blip on the throttle does it then again it points back to settings choke mode not right. Ride Free Joe.
Joe, Yes, the plugs were done at the same time so they only have about 2k on them. Choke? Didn't know my bike had one? Is that something I can increase myself? Sorry for confusion Many thanks I appreciate it
‘The battery seems fine’. But how old is it? I suspect the noise you hear is the starter screaming but insufficient solenoid ‘throw’ to engage the cog after a couple of asthmatic attempts. Simple test. Jump lead to car battery and then try. I bet your battery is not generating the amperage it once did and the car battery will remind you of what it used to be like!
Well, to be fair it came on the bike and I’ve had it 3 years. I will give that a go tonight and let you know how I got on. Many thanks
Nick The choke will be controlled by the ECU settings. But Callumity has a good point and its worth a try. Regards Joe.
When you jump start the bike off the car battery make sure that the ignition keys for the car are in your pocket. Use just the car battery without the engine running. Some car charging systems can be harmful to the battery and charging system on your bike !
Gents, You were right. Battery was knackered. Easy fix after getting a new one. Happy days. Thanks all
