heres something I came across whilst looking for something else.
To reduce the strain on the engine related parts when starting for the first of the day or others. Obviously the bikes have a big lump in them and it puts a lot of strain on the starting mechanism it helps to pull the clutch in. This us great when the bike is warm, But when the bike is cold sometimes the clutch plates stick together which then means you are then attempting to "break" the clutch plates thus making everything work harder. So to aliviate this, before starting hold clutch in, put into first gear, rock her back and forwards until all, if any, resistance is broken from stuck clutch plates, knock her back into neutral, turn on ignition and start her. Hope this makes sense.

Makes perfect sense to me, on my bike the engine will not crank until clutch lever pulled in, it is very important that correct engine oil is used, if filling additives engine oil make sure its OK to use with a wet clutch.

Strange dose of de ja vu here. Ever since I started my first bike with one of them kick starter thingies I was told to pull the clutch in so you weren't turning the gear box when you tried to start the bike. Same thing happened when I moved on to four wheels, the driving instructor told me to depress the clutch before trying to start the car especially in cold weather. Still doing it oh so very many years later:cool:

yep well its from the kickstart days, remember when you kickstarted her, then clunked her into 1st and she'd lurch forward? well that was meant to alleviate that

Same here - always depress the clutch in the car ever since my driving instructor told me to all those years ago. (It was a Vauxhall Viva HC)

Plus another one for dipping the clutch on start-up - helps a fair bit with a tired battery too.

My dad had an HB 1159 before I learnt to drive. At the time of me learning he had a Hillman Avenger 1500.

My old lad's first car was a Ford Anglia saloon, followed by the estate car version. Then he graduated through a Mk 2 to a Mk 4 Cortina, a baby Mazda and finally a bloody Austin Allegro. When that heap of crap packed up he surrendered his ticket due to illness.
As for me, my first was a Ford Consul Cortina on C plate with a column change and bench front seat.
