    Barrack room lawyer alert!

Despite what some of the planks in the DM comments say, this makes perfect sense......

Relatively few crimes are crimes of strict Commission I.e. you did it so you are guilty..... things like parking offences. Guy was charged with a form of dishonesty. Most ‘proper’ (!) crimes require the dirty deed and a formed intent. Reus actus and mens rea for the pub bores amongst you. Now, if you don’t have an appreciation that what you are doing is wrong you cannot form the necessary guilty intent. It seems Guy’s Asperger’s means he was probably conned himself about acquiring his Irish licence. (Much like DD and the quality of their whiskEy!)

There is a historical parallel with a nutter who tried to shoot Queen Victoria. They had to change the law to pacify her that he was ‘Guilty but insane ‘ and change it back because ever since it would be ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’. Intent, you see? You still get a one way ticket to Broadmoor because you get sectioned under the Mental Health Acts.
