Just finished stripping my Rear Final Drive for a clean and Bearing re -grease. As the nearside bearings are of the sealed ball type and feel good they will be left as they are. However, the offside Needle Roller Bearing although feeling good as well had no visible "grease", only a black thin fluid as though Oil separation had taken place. Because of the Hub design with a fairly large "void" between the nearside and offside bearings it would appear that there is a good chance that any grease applied to the offside needle bearing can be displaced during normal running. Triumph recommend Mobil Grease HP 222 so I presume this is what was used at the factory. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a more "sticky" (stay in place) alternative. Mobil XHP222 is supposed to be highly adhesive. I would clean up what you can and lightly repack with the same stuff.
Hi Our Gee, whilst you have the wheel off I would suggest you check the rear suspension linkages as triumph have always been very tight with the grease on those bearings. as for grease I have always used copper grease with no problems.
I'm no expert on the matter, but I really don't think you should use copper grease. You could probably damage the bearings.
I completely agree. Copper grease may be used around the eccentric adjuster, just a light smear. Thats what the factory put there. Moly grease can also be used in the hub bearings if thats all you got. And yes do the suspension linkages
Copper 'grease' is not technically a grease anyway, as it is not designed to lubricate in the way that a 'normal' grease would. It is designed to act as a barrier/anti-sieze compound. Using it to pack bearings would be an excellent way of destroying the bearing in double quick time...
Cheers for that I have been using the stuff for yrs with no idea It wasnt suitable. I knew it was called anti-seize compound but I thought it was ok as a grease as it can take temperatures up to 1100 deg C and was waterproof

Yes it is, just not as a bearing grease. Get specific bearing grease and you'll be fine - I use this stuff :

Copper grease is actually an anti seize, and it’s definitely not intended to be used as a lubricant for your bearings. Whilst you can use copper grease on your brakes in some circumstances, it’s definitely not intended to be used on your wheel bearings. Good vids. But why go to that length and not remove the eccentic when they give so many problems with corrosion? Btw copperslip is what they use at the factory here.
