    Afternoon everyone.

Serious newbie here. Finally passed my DAS last Friday after starting back in July! (Work was a b*tch to get time off and my instructor could never get weekend tests)

Bought myself a 2005 Daytona 600 on Wednesday. Got 20 minutes up the road and the oil/coolant light came on! As a new rider I wasn't sure which was the issue, and being by myself I checked the oil level whilst on it's side stand and came to the conclusion that it was empty! Wife took a trip to Halfords to buy some oil while I sat in a layby on a country lane in the rain. When she returned I had her hold the bike upright so I could check the oil again, and it turned out to be fine :joy:

After my long wait the bike had obviously cooled so I managed to make it home without the light coming back on again, checked the overflow tank once I'd got there and it was bone dry! I topped it up with distilled water the next morning and went for a 10 minute ride but the temp crept back up to 120°C.
Managed to have the local garage pick it up that afternoon. Thinking that they wouldn't have it sorted until the weekend, they called me on Friday to tell me the radiator was also bone dry, they'd filled it up and taken it out for a 10 mile ride and it didn't creep above 80, so all should be sound.

Got her back, and went for a nice 70-80 mile ride yesterday morning. First to get some headphones so I could listen to some AC/DC, and then onwards around the outside of Norwich to open her up a bit. Upon heading home, I reached the bottom end of the village I live in, and it completely died on me as I went around a corner at about 25mph!
There was a horrendous smell coming from under the pillion seat cowl. A passerby stopped in her car and came to see if I needed any help (she later gave me a lift home) and another lady came from her house to take her dogs for a walk and commented on how she could smell it when she left! She told me her Dad works for Lyng Triumph (a nice coincidence) and gave me his number so that I could call for advice, and offered to park the bike in her drive whilst I called the RAC.

In the end the garage that sorted the rad issue came to recover the truck. Thinking once again it would be a few days before hearing from them, they called within 2 hours (2pm on a Saturday - they normally shut at 1pm!) and told me that the regulator rectifier had given in, that the battery was no longer square and was on the verge of bursting! Probably something to do with the previous overheating  I thank my lucky stars that the extent of this was a stinking pair of jeans.

Needless to say I got in touch with the seller after the overheating issue. He refunded me £100 by way of an apology but I'm not convinced it was even checked properly before the sale, and he's obviously taken advantage of the fact I'm new to riding.

Anyway, you live and learn I guess. I've had an eventful first week to say the least! And hopefully this will be the end of it as I'd like to be able to just wake up in the mornings and go for a nice ride whilst I'm off work for 2 weeks!

Apologies for the long winded post!

Welcome to the forum Lynch. PM me the last six numbers of your VIN number and I'll check if the reg/rec is a recall item on your bike. I have a feeling it was and so might still be covered free of charge, unless Lings already checked for you.

Thanks Littleade, I'll take on that point regarding the music. Albeit I had it at a low whisper so could still hear everything I needed to, though I can fully understand where you're coming from.

The sale was private but through a trader on behalf of the previous owner.. the guy told me he wants to open his own shop in the near future. I'm not sure he'd be too successful if he can't even check the basics on the bikes he's selling.

It's frustrating, as I know it can be an expensive hobby and I did actually plan to spend money upgrading the bike, but not on mechanical issues within the first week!

I've read on other forums that regulators are mounted in the hottest parts of bikes. Is that the case with the D6's? If so where is recommended to have them mounted once they're replaced?

Also, I'd like to think the mechanics that have my bike would know this anyway, but is it good measure to check the stator incase that's knackered aswell?
