Hi Everybody, Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Right yet another problem. The filler cap on the fuel tank will not unlock with the key, it will only turn part way. I have sprayed everything into the keyway over the past few days, all to no avail. Will I have to replace the filler cap and if so how do you get the old 1 off?.
    Cheers all.

Try a bit of penetrating oil on the seal allowing it to soak in. It wont damage the seal or the paintwork and might just free things up so you can remove the whole lot. Then deal with the lock when it's free from the tank and you can see what's stopping it from working.

Happy new year everybody, update on the fuel cap issue (see photos). No wonder it wouldn't unlock, the inside of the tank doesn't look too clever either. So new fuel filler cap and associated parts plus possibly a new tank?. Took the opportunity to take the carbs off as well, will pull them apart later. Now pros and cons on re-fitting original air box or fitting K&N filters, thoughts please.

Before you bin the tank, or try expensive cleaning treatments try ordinary cheap vinegar.
Almost fill the tank with vinegar, add a few large nuts shake the tank and then leave it for a few hours, shaking to rattle the nuts about, drain out the tank, separate the sediment and then put the vinegar back and repeat for several times. It might take several days but you will be surprised at the difference.
When finished with the vinegar neutralise the tank with a solution of bicarbonate of soda.

I did this on an old moped tank and the inside of the tank ended up looking like new - Best of luck!!!

    Go for the K&N’s

if you want to spend a lot of time and money buying jets, air screws and the like to get it to run half decent.
That was my experience with them anyway, oh and don’t park it in the rain and expect it to run right if water gets on them.
Kind of a long winded way of saying stick with the original air filter arrangement. :)

    Wow seconded.
Replace the air box and get everything running, if you want upgrade later then fine.
At least, that way you know whats to blame if you have problems.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have just found out from the previous owner that the bike hadn't been in the shed for 2 years, in fact it has been in the shed since July 2007 and it hadn't been run for 2 years. No wonder it is in a state.
Am I right in thinking that the filler cap is a "non vented type".

My bike isn't listed, so looks like it wouldn't fit.

No it won't fit, its a Bonneville part, replaces the standard screw filler cap.
