Hi guys. I’ve just stripped the carbs on my 2001 Bonneville, cleaned the jets and replaced the float valve. Started her up and lots of sooty emissions!
I checked the air filter and it’s soaked in petrol. I dried out the air box and started her up and she runs fine...BUT..when left standing, switched off, the air box starts filling with fuel again..am I just looking at a stuck float valve or crud on the seating ?
    Thanks in advance

    Neil

Make sure its not just a stuck needle first. If not you have a little tongue on the float that operates the needle shut of plunger. Just adjust the tongue till it shuts of at the desired point without overflowing the float bowl.

If you have the carbs of it is an easy job. I just get a refill tube and a remote filler then just loosely hold the float bowls and let them fill then check. Remember when you take them of the level will drop a little in the bowl as the float raises it when on. This you will know if the fuel overflows the bowl edges as you meet them up. I am not explaining this as good as I know it in my head. Hop you can work it out.
    Regards
    Joe.

It sounds like the needle is not seated properly or being held open. The fuel rises so the floats are too high or obstructed if there is no shut off.

The top of the floats should ride 16-18 mm above the rim of the float bowl. You adjust by bending the tab onto which the needle valve is hooked.

Also , is there a vacuum hose from one intake manifold to the fuel tap ? Not sure of the Bonneville's , but earlier carbureted T300's (trident etc) they had vacuum switched fuel taps ? Has yours ? It could be the faulty part , they last 6 to 10 years.

    Hi Capt,
I don’t believe it does but I’ll gladly stand corrected. I’m hopefully having enough time myself to check the float height and seat for debris tomorrow..
