I would like to fit a 19 tooth sprocket to my T100 Bonneville but the chain is relatively new with no wear. Will I be able to fit the new sprocket without changing the chain and moving the wheel forward on the chain adjusters? Or would i need to change the chain to one with an extra link or two? D Bland
I've done this on a 2004 790cc T100 and a 2012 865 SE. You will need to slacken off the back wheel and the adjusters in order to give the chain more slack for the larger sprocket to fit. Simple enough job and then set the correct adjustment on the chain making sure the rear wheel is aligned and then finish by tightening the two adjusters up to 5Nm otherwise they will work loose. I think the rear wheel spindle nut is 85Nm.
May I ask out of curiosity why one would want to do this? Not a trick question; I have really no idea about any technical details. Andreas
Well worth the time exchanging it, so more of a relaxed ride with the lower revs. How-ever, if you are wanting to climb Swiss mountains you could go the other way and fit a 17t sprocket, you will be able to go straight up the north face of the Eiger without stopping!
I have now ordered a 19 tooth sprocket and am looking forward to fitting it. However I have just been told the thread on the sprocket nut may be a left handed thread (anti clockwise to tighten and clockwise to loosen) Is this right. It's not a problem but It will be easier if I start doing it the right way
I thought about doing this to my 2017 T100, but 1st is a moderately tall ratio in mine and I have to deal with some interesting non hard surface roads frequently that I don't think it would be such a great idea.

Well I have now fitted the 19Toot sprocket and to be honest I am a little dissapointed. I was led to believe it would take the engine revs down by about 500 revs a minute in all gears. However the difference is not very noticeable if anything it may have taken the revs down about 200 at the most. I can see it making a difference if you go from 17 to 19 but 18 to 19 is not worth it.. I will have to take the sprocket cover off and count the teeth because I am not convinced it's right. It is bigger than the 18Tooth sprocket so I can only assume this one has 19 teeth. On the plus side the old sprocket was quite worn after 20 thousand miles so it needing replacing anyway. David
Carried this mod out on my T100 and as the boy's say, it's a bit like having overdrive, drops rev's in 5th gear, so more relaxed riding TBB.
I agree completely. I fitted a 19 tooth from an 18 and could hardly tell the difference. Wish I had noted the revs before and after fitting the 19 tooth just to see how little difference there is.
Yeah the annoying this is though this 'upgrade' is advertised on the websites as being a positive upgrade which will improve the ride and it has made hardly any difference. The only good point is the old 18 tooth sprocket was worn after 20 thousand miles and needed replacing anyway
You could do the rear sprocket ! Two or three teeth is equal (roughly) to one on the front, so more fine tuning is possible.... ?
I changed from 18t to 19t on my 2010 T100 and it made a noticeable difference. At 60mph it dropped the revs by about 350, in top gear.
Hi DG this was done on a Bonny I had until 2016. I can't remember offhand what the revs at particular speeds were - all I remember was the effect of the change of sprocket.
