Hey just a question I have a 2010 street triple r Put some new indicators on the other week so after finishing wouldn’t start so I’d guessed I drained the battery. charged battery and first two times I pressed to start it nothing happened. Then 3rd time it started straight up. when you turn them off normally you always here the noise of like a grumbling computer shutting down ( not sure what the technical term is ) on the two failed starts that noise seemed to go on a little more than usual Now is it anything to be concerned about or just me draining battery and bike not been started for around 3 to 4 weeks ? Thanks
Sorry but your description is slightly inexact and a wee bit insufficient.. Does ‘nothing happened’ literally mean that or ‘it turned over but didn’t fire up’ or......dead electrically? Ditto noises. If it’s ok now I would simply guess the fuel pump/lines had maybe drained down. However a 10 yr old bike on its ? battery in cold weather might just not be throwing out enough amps to excite the ECU or be right on the margins and getting erratic. Have you checked and cleaned battery connections etc?
Yeh sorry I am new to biking yeh just nothing happened it didn’t turn over, pressed the start button and nothing that’s why after turning it off and on 2 to 3 times that it turned over and started straight away Left it running and tried it a couple of times during the day and it started fine but yes sorry maybe electrical, all dials and everything lit up as usual but didn’t turn over
optimate trickle charger (or others) is a battery tender/charger. @Callumity knows his beans. Hi andy! PICS!!
I bought Oxford oximiser yesterday and put it on last night that’s when today first couple of attempts pressed button to start and didn’t even make a noise Then third time it turned over and started which I thought was strange ?
Can't say for sure but no battery likes cold temps and tbf, we are all expecting some weird crap to happen over the winter/cold snap. I'd keep monitoring it tbh and just not panic at the mo.
I would slacken off and wiggle both battery terminals then re-tighten. You would be doing yourself a favour to get a small tube of silicone grease (often called di-electric) with which to smear the terminals after you have cleaned them. It inhibits corrosion and reduces the resistance to current flow it causes. You will also have the other end of the earth strap (follow thick cable from -ve post) to wherever it connects with the frame or engine. Bonnevilles connect to a stud on the underside of the gearbox and I expect yours is similar. In any event, corrosion will increase electrical resistance so they to benefit from a clean up. The other possible glitches are in the ignition switch and starter button - likewise water ingress over time. WD40 or an electrical contact cleaner are your friends for light routine maintenance. Finally, if you don’t know the battery history just bear in mind their modest size and that starting is their biggest chore. A new battery on an Optimate will give you a few years but a neglected one left discharged can be killed quite quickly by chemical changes in the plates/glass matting.
Hi AndyGuy, those early street triples had a few starting issues as you describe, as Callumity says one is the starter button, water ingress espesically after vigerous washing will cause the issues you describe, WD40 or ACF50 sprayed in will help, if your bike has a Datatool alarm fitted check the serial number on the Datatool website, there was a faulty batch that imobalises the machine randomly, the faulty unit is replaced FOC, the machine is collected from home and taken to a Triumph dealer for a new unit, then returned to you. Also the batteries if not kept on a trickle charger they soon go duff, once that happens a new one is the only answer, a charge up will not sort the issue out, it will short term but it will let you down again at some point. Ride safe all.
I have the exact problem. My battery also drains. Just joined this Forum now to see if other people cant help also. I have a 2008 Truimph Speed Triple 1050. Brand new batery.. Brand new rectifier and just installed a brand new stator in it and nothing. My bike also will light up the display but when you hit that start button nothi g happends. Im changing all my fuses today but that still does not help with the fact that the battery is draining the hole time.. I also installed new indicator lights. Dont know if that is the problem

Just to add something about the starter button as previously said. I had a 2015 Street Triple which displayed the exact same symptoms as your 2010 model. A spray of electrical contact cleaner into the switch cured it for a month or two.
