@Dozers Dad in honor of all you gents and St. George, I went for a ride to source an essential household part, and source some celebratory English beer. Got lost a couple of times due a defective gps, went past the essential open triumph shop and detected a miss, so I pulled in, but no rocket 3 on the showroom. Went past the empty medical center that has sent surpluss staff elsewhere to assist. I truly wish the rest of you could do the same!!! The only English beer I could find was expensive Samuel Smith organic lager (pretty sure all beer is organic). Tastes about like Guinness stout and the same alcohol 5% as American beer. Bought and drank one for St George, and one for privateer (pirate). Still looking forward to a beer fund for the GMU. Stay safe.

    Sam Smith’s from Tadcaster?

Talking about English v American beers is a bit like calling my mate Nigerian just because he happened to be born there. He doesn’t ‘look’ Nigerian and he doesn’t ‘sound’ Nigerian but that also depends on what you personally think the ‘Nigerian’ tag means.

The often touted German purity laws say beer can only contain: water, barley, hops and yeast. However all 4 of those vary from the way barley (variety?) is malted, the variety of hops and whether the yeast is a top or bottom feeder or both.

Beer doesn’t have national allegiances which is fortunate for the Germans because Pilsen is in the Czech Republic.

Are you familiar with isinglass? Google it.

It wasn’t ‘in’ the beer but as a part time cellarman we used to dose the barrels before filling to clarify the beer of yeast in suspension.

    Fishy!

There’s an area in the west end of london where the majority of pubs were Samual Smith pubs,
    D1D948CA-E417-4B19-9768-E811B3507312.jpeg
they traditionally were basic no frill pubs with cheap beer no tvs or other entertainment, they kept the interiors and food very traditional in fact some are known as tourist attractions because of the interiors, princess louise in Holborn for one. It has glassed off compartments around the bar that can sit around 8 ,I think,
Been a while since I’ve been there.

Sam smiths brewery isn’t far from me and we’ve one of there pubs 300 yards from my house, you can only buy Sam smiths products, they do a hand pulled bitter under £2 a pint , sovereign which is a electric pump bitter, lager, there own stout, they did do cider and mild not sure if they still do,there’s not entertainment in Sam smith puds plus no swearing and the latest is no mobile phones, Humphrey is the owner who’s best described as eccentric but he’s mainly described as a fucking nutter, I don’t mind there bitter but it’s not my favourite,I would say the main attraction of Sam smiths is the price and it’s strong it gets you pissed.

I remember my first trip to the US, which was for a family reunion and thought the be would all be Bud etc. I was blown away by the variety and quality craft beers, it's one of the things I look forward to now. Just have to be careful when asking for something hoppy, making sure that I really am in the mood for full on hop explosion!

WE have, in the past few years, expanded our craft beer selection. I am a particular fan of IPA's. I do love a good "hoppy" brew!

  8. Sam Smith was John Smiths' father - both breweries are in Tadcaster next door to one another.
If you drive along the A64 when the river is in flood and you can just see the cross bar of the football posts on the pitches at the back of the brewery, it reminds me why I never drink either - that flood water is the main ingredient....

I don’t know that I’ve had English, German, or whatever kind of beer. I do know Guinness is my favorite. I did live in Japan for four years and they have some decent beer. I also like some old school “American” beer like Miller High Life and Schlitz. I would love to try some English beer if I could. I have to wait until the doc says “ok”. ☹️

What would be a proper English beer so I could pick up a sample next time I'm out and about? Tonight having a common beer, with some microwave popcorn. Will have a Guinness later.

One type of traditional English beer would be brewed in a cask or bottle using something like Fuggles bittering hops and Goldings for aroma. Based on places that I have lived I would have said something like Youngs bitter, Ringwood Fortyniner or Bass draft a few years ago, but now there are so many micro brewers, why not find a good local brewer and see if they do any traditional recipes.

try some stuff from one of your micro breweries, they’ve come on a long way, although good they’re not quite the same as an ale, imagine one that’s not fizzy and warm! Oh! and not so strong so you can drink a vast quantity!

John smiths isn’t a bad pint if it’s looked after, weatherspoons near me do it for £1.99 and it’s bang on every pint, it’s not my favourite but it’s ok, they also have some smaller breweries on, one was ship yard it was like drinking perfume,I took it back I thought it was off, best hand bitter when looked after was Tetleys hand pull but you can’t get it now of the same standard.

St. Peter's pub ale is fairly accurate, so is Fuller's London Pride. Black Sheep Ale is a good standard bitter. All of these are available in USA. However, nothing replicates Real Cask Ale in the pub.
