Do I have to declare a speeding conviction on an insurance quote if I did a driver awareness course and came away with 0 points?

I believe these aren’t declare able as the driver awareness bods don’t pass on any details, there was a bit of scaremongering going on about them having to make it public but I think that was probably circulated by the insurance companies! Don’t take my word as gospel, I’m sure there’s answers out rhere

I have declared it on another car insurance so maybe they will have it on record now but I don’t really see why it should be declared when I recieved no points and no fine.
It’s a grey area but the difference in insurance quotes for my new bike with and without the sp30 is £200. I think I’m going to leave it.

As a basic matter of UK law insurance contracts are uberrimae fidei - Latin for ‘the utmost good faith’. It is all the wriggle room they need to disown you if you have not made a full declaration in your proposal form; hence all those legal warnings.

From an insurer’s perspective it is about determining the level of risk and appropriate price. If you think about it, why would you conceal such a conviction unless to get a better price......pecuniary advantage by deception?

Being honest is generally the best course of action - especially with a zero pointer. Being dishonest could end up costing very much more.....and then there is the ‘have you ever been refused.....’ question. You would wind up on the shared database.

You might find it is where a broker wins out over a comparison website. They compete for vanilla customers and don’t want iffy business but others specialise in picking out low risk cases for a modestly inflated premium.

    Exactly this!

I’m going to look further into it but if @Callumity is correct (which I suspect he is) then the speed awareness course is a complete waste of time, just take the points.
I’ll keep you posted with what I find!

Bottom line is this. Yes, as DD says they ask if you have had any convictions or accidents in the last 5 years and IF there is a section that asks if you have been on a driver improvement course you are contractually obliged to answer truthfully. If it hasn’t got that question don’t say owt.

.......anyway, the strict answer to the original question is ‘it all depends’.....from insurer to insurer.

In the case of Liverpool Victoria...no

You obligation is to truthfully answer the questions asked, not to volunteer additional information.

Turns out this is the correct answer, spoke to somebody who works in insurance, he pretty much said this. You don’t have to volunteer any extra information as long as you have answered all questions honestly.

Having only done one of these last week unless your insurance company spefically ask for information you don’t have to mention anything. What was more worrying for me is that the guy who ran the coarse I was on said that all helmets including sharp tested rated up to 5 star were only tested to to 14-16 mile per hour impact pressure. Really I paid £500 for my helmet with a 5 star rating I said he reckons it’s true. So I’m going to do some research and find out . Any of you guys know about this ?

The question posed is typically “do you have any motoring convictions, current or pending?”.
If you opt to take the awareness course then you do not have any convictions (assuming this was your first time caught speeding) so answer “No”, and as others have said, you need not add any more detail, just honestly.

Yep, had to phone Bennett’s today as I’ve just put a private plate on my bike and the lass on the phone confirmed this was the case.
Really impressed with Bennett’s btw, over £100 cheaper than anyone else.

I can't help but wonder if there is a different perspective to this.

In the future it could be argued that if the defendant is being offered either penalty points or taking an awareness course, these are forms of punishment following conviction. So if the question is "Any convictions?" and this is not declared, then the tenant of 'Utmost Good Faith' has not been complied with - claim declined !!
