Hi I've taken your advice and moved the discussion to a Daytona 900 thread, makes sense then anyone wanting info can find stuff more easily. I've ordered some single air filters instead of replacing the original air box filter. I can always go back to the air box
There was no record of any shims being checked and given the fact the air filter hadn't been changed, also at 24,000 miles it was a good idea.
Measured the inlet and exhaust valve clearances and documented the results on a spreadsheet. My previous job involved spreadsheets so i created one that could record and calculated the new shim size. This is based on measured valve clearance, current shim size, and the acceptable minimum and maximum valve clearance tolerances documented by Triumph.
This is a picture of the spreadsheet used, everyone is more then welcome to use it. I'll upload a blank copy and all you need to do is enter your feeler gauge readings. As you can see, a number were too tight or close to the lower limit. I did re-check them twice over to ensure i hadn't miss read any of the readings. I documented from cylinder 1 to 3 for inlet and then exhaust. These had never been checked before and given the readings it was about time.
Doesn't look like i can upload a spreadsheet, but if you'd like a copy email me and I'll send you a copy
Did you also order the 4th air filter, i.e. the little one to fit in the top of the engine breather pipe which otherwise connects to the bottom of the air filter box? Apparently it is necessary - so I'm lead to believe .... possibly! Do please let us know how you get on with them. Some seem to work well straight out of the box, while others would try the patience of a saint.
Hi Thanks for your post and yes K&N do a little breather filter which i'll fit once I've sorted the cams out. I did do a test fit and they went on ok, also like the look. Will balance the carbs and post the results up as well
Once i'd recorded the valve clearances, i steamed on and removed the cam shafts, I made sure i marked and stored everything i removed so i could ensure they went back exactly as i found them. The cam mounts were already marked when built by Triumph
Replaced shims where needed with a magnet, no wear in any of the buckets. Getting the shims out of the buckets was fiddly, i used extra strong magnets and some small suckers. Never done this before but always seems easy when you know how !!
I'm enjoying your ongoing servicing and pics Chris. Great to see like minded individuals getting stuck in and doing it themselves. Both cost saving and highly satisfying.
Replaced all the shims per spreadsheet above, refitted the cams in the position they were removed, and torqued down the cam mounts
Chris. Just out of interest. The K&N filters you brought. What bike were they for.? K&N told me they didn't do A Cone filter for my Thunderbird 900. Yet the carbs look the same on your bike .
I rechecked all the valve clearances twice!! and inputted the new values into the spread sheet. As you can see all the new readings are within limits 'green boxes' I've edged towards the maximum value as in time the clearances get smaller as the valves seat further when closed.
Hi purchased from Sprint, i would have gone for the K&N air filter's as well but they were a bit on the pricey side
