Morning guys. Im having a nightmare with my speedy so i thought id ask your opinion and help. Monday morning i nipped out to the shop before work, came back to drop off the stuff i had bought and when i came to get started again i turned the bike on and it just sluggishly turned over a couple of times and then that was that. I thought straight away the battery was toast so i charged it up at home. After an hour i hooked it back up and although it didnt sound great starting up, it started. So off i went to work. Left it on charge all day at work and then when I came to go home it just clicked from the solenoid. So, i bought a new battery charged it, put it on and.... click again fron the starter. Iv took the starter off and tried to test it on the battery and it wont spin up which makes me think that the starters dead. But strangely putting a multimeter on the wire to the starter from the solenoid and pressing the starter and im getting nada. Which surely means im getting no current to the starter motor either? Whats the chances of the starter and the solenoid both dying at exactly the same time? Its driving me mental as i have a very limited knowledge of electrics. All i know is the lights, dash fuel pump prime every time, horn works etc so cant be the battery in my eyes. Can someone help me as i rely on my bike for day to day commuting and im bot sure what to try next without taking it to a garage. Thanks Andy.
I found this;- Starting System Symptoms: Weak battery symptoms: -- Slow cranking. -- Stops cranking suddenly on compression stroke with button pressed. -- Starts when starter button is released at end of cranking. Repair: -- Charge/Test/Replace battery. Failure Modes: -- Loss of capacity. Appears to charge, voltage good but no reserve for starting. -- Won't hold a charge. -- Low voltage/cell failure. Preventative Maintenance: -- Check fluid levels regularly -- Maintain full charge: Regular riding, trickle charger. Ignition Coil failure symptoms: -- Hard starting/misfiring during cranking. -- Rough idle that can't be tuned out with carb adjustments and carb cleaning. -- Idle misfire clears with new sparkplugs, returns in a few hundred miles Repair: -- Replace: Preferably with Nology for higher reliability than stock Gill coils. Failure Mode: -- Shorted turns in secondary resulting in weak spark. Preventative Maintenance: -- None Testing: Pickup Coil failure symptoms: -- No spark at all -- Spark quits with engine hot, returns when engine cool. -- Note: Pickup coil failure is total. There is no random misfire spark loss. Repair: -- Replace pickup coil Failure mode: -- Thermal intermittant with long (15-30 minute) period. Preventative Maintenance: -- None. Get a spare. Testing: -- Ohms checks hot and cold. Worn starter symptoms: -- Sometimes won't crank until the bike is rocked in gear. -- Excessively noisy cranking with a grinding sound. -- Click from under seat but no cranking. Failure Mode: -- Brush wear progressing to commutator damage. -- Bearing failure related to brush wear. Repair: -- Rebuild or replace. Preventative Maintenance: -- Maintan battery in peak condition. -- Follow proper starting procedures. Neutral, clutch in. -- Crank 5-10 seconds at a time max., switch off for twice as long before cranking again. Worn sprag clutch symptoms: -- Very loud rattling when cranking -- Starter spins but engine doesn't turn Falure Mode: -- Breakage Repair: -- Replace sprag clutch Preventative Maintenance: -- Maintain battery in peak condition. -- Follow proper starting procedures. Neutral, clutch in. Worn starter solenoid: -- Click from under seat but no cranking. -- Won't crank after rocking bike. -- Starter continues to run after bike starts and won't stop until the battery is disconnected. Failure mode: -- Internal contact damage resulting in non-conduction. -- Internal contact damage resulting in contacts welding shut. -- Internal damage/wear prevents solenoid core movement. Preventative Maintenance: -- None. Repair: -- Replace starter solenoid. Testing: -- For no cranking, short across solenoid high-power terminals. Normal operation denotes failed solenoid contacts.
Ok i can certainly try bridging the solenoid connectors aswell as checking various wires. I still dont understand why i cant get the starter motor to spin on a battery. im struggling to see how both have gone simultaneously.
the white wire from the bottom of the keyswitch to the multi plug. the wire is a solid conductor and is prone to cracking and snapping where it flexs around the headstock.
Everything is in a line so if, x is not working check y, the thing before it , incase y is the reason that x is not working
Right so iv found the problem. And its pretty bad. When i took the cover for the starter gear off it had a load of creamy white oil in the cover so im guessing there has been water ingress into the cover. Also when iv stripped the starter motor it was full of oil. Also the brushes are dead. This in turn has killed the solenoid. This has literally got to be the worst two years of biking iv ever had. What with having my accident last year (also on a speed triple) not really recovering and then finally get my new bike and this happens. Also to make it worse Triumph dealers want £500 quid for a starter motor which in my opinion is ridiculous. Starting to lose a bit of faith at the moment. Ironically the only bike i had that never ever let me down was an Aprilia Mille.
Its JUST an idea for a road to take, you will have to research,if you get one for your bike and your Starter is original should be good Compare on Triumph sites then look for the same part on discount sites.
Andrew. Not that this will help but I had the same problem on a t100. Racked my brains and tried replacement bits. It turned out to be a dodgy clutch switch the switch by the lever had pushed into the hole where it locates and the side stand switch was jammed with dirt. Hope you get it running soon. Joe
Yeah cheers mate. I hoped it was that too. I looked at that after looking at the forums. Iv stripped the starter motor and its full of oil. Also the brushes are knackered and theres damage to the armiture inside too. What worrying me is how it has got oil in it.

Hi guys, I have seen a low mileage used one on evil bay and it looks great and cheap apart from the part numbers dont match. My starter i took off is a 2011 model 1310605 part no and the one iv seen is from a 2013 part no 1311114. Does anyone know if it will fit? Or if there are differences between year what they are? I know the mountings are different at the back on older ones but these two look identical. Iv searched online but not found anything to help. Hope you guys can!
This is a part I suspect will be shared by many bikes not just Triumphs look at yours for a makers mark then cross check on google, see wikipedia etc also look here to see which bikes have the same part number then look for this on ebay http://www.worldoftriumph.com/triumph-motorcycle-parts.html Or is that what you said.
