My existing laptop was starting to get a bit long in the tooth so I was looking around for a replacement. Obviously computer the market is still dominated by Microsoft operating system and I just detest Ms so I looked for alternatives, such as Chrome books.

These operate on a completely different system Google Chrome, have no internal hard drives (like Apple products) and they appealed to me so I looked on Amazon France and found an Asus C200 Chromebook for 199€ delivered to my door the next day.

Well it's an absolute delight !! Light, very modern-feeling and excellent for what I want to do: internet/e-mail/communications etc. Works on and off-line.

It just works !!! No arsing about it just works. Loads of battery life, immediate start-up, beautiful sound quality for listening to you-tube music videos - it's just drop dead great.

How about migrating from Windows to Chrome, I've got over 100 Gb of existing stuff? Easy peasy. Migrating my e-mail/contacts etc - 3 clicks and you're done.

As you can probably tell I'm pleased with my new toy !!! Because it jsut works and allows me to get on.

Just for general interest you understand.

My wife bought the googly thing as she hated the way her iPad/iCloud took control of her photos. I'm not sure, every time it opens up it tries to get you to buy stuff of Amazon. Will have to sit down and study it at some point.

I recently bought a new laptop. Went with Windoze again as sadly that's the system that woks for me.
With my hobby I link my radios to the laptop so that I can control the radio and adjust settings for various things on the fly.
Whilst these chrome books are quite good they are limited.
Before you buy one make sure it's able to do what you need it for. Sadly windoze tends still to be the best supported OS still by other software writers.
If like me you use it for a more unusual purpose rather than for simple web browsing etc then a windoze PC/Laptop may still be your best option.

Yes mate, as part of my migration plan I dumped ALL my stuff onto an ext HDD and then once the new toy was up and running (about 30 mins!!) sent everything up to the 15 Gb of free cloud.

I'm listening to a Pink Floyd concert as I'm typing and it's just brilliant. Yes, you guessed, I quite like it !!!!!!!!!!!

just a word of warning about storing important things in in the cloud,it is not unknown for date to get lost/deleted,my friend had all his books for his business on the cloud (although luckily he also took back ups onto a external hard drive) and for whatever reason he was unable to access it:confused: i've resisted storing anything on the cloud but if i do i will put everything on a ext HDD too, as the most common data lose on the cloud seems to be accidently deleating it yourself:eek:

My wife said she's lost a load of photos that were on cloud, I think I'll have to believe her now

Is it still easy to set up a dual boot system on Windows 10? Or were you going to just use Linux?
It used to be easier to use TCP/IP on Linux on the radio ( was easier to configure than using windows along with a couple of other modes.
Just curious rather than intent to use them.

Besides my work station which is a Lenovo running Windows 7 I also run a Dell Mil-Spec Latitude laptop on Windows 7. Chose this particular laptop as it has easy access to replacing components i.e. hard drives, boards and such. I prefer Windows 7 as it does all I need reliably. Have a 2nd Gen IPad but only use it for comm checks when traveling.
I don't rely on just "cloud" and back up everything of importance automatically on an external terabyte drive.

Well I ran into my first issue with the Chromebook yesterday. Tried to print off the doc I'd just created re my on-line tax declaration. Saved the doc no probs but could not get it to print using my std. Canon printer via the USB cable.

Did a bit of research and found that Chromebooks print via "Cloud ready" printers connected to the 'net. Found a way of using my old laptop and the 'net interface' and then registered my printer to my cloud.

So until I have purchased a new printer I can still print docs etc using the lappy to connect my classic printer to my Chromebook. Not the most elegant solution, but it works.

I have had a chrome book for some time now but only use it for surfing the web. It is refreshingly fast and trouble free - a bit like a big smart phone with a keyboard!

Well well well, all this technical expertise on here. So I hope you don't mind if I ask for some advice off all you techno nerds. The thing is after giving it much thought and discussing it with the wife of course I've decided to take the plunge and buy a colour telly. Do you think it's a good move ?

Like owning and riding bikes of different types/manufacturers what technology you punt for is equally as much a personal choice. I worked for over 35 years in IT and there are pros and cons for all platforms and operating systems. Just go with what you are comfortable with and what works for you and your application and you won't go far wrong. What ever platform you decide on always back-up your files onto a remote hard drive. Don't rely on the web as it is not as secure or reliable as the providers would have you think. As an added benefit if you have your own backed up copy of your data/photo's you will never be at risk from data scammers or vitrual blackmail. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Still happy with me Chromebook !!!

2 days worth of battery if I used it 6-8 hrs per day, dead easy to use. Even Google Docs works for me.

Going down the whole Google route might seem a bit like Microsoft Windows 10.76 and Office - but the difference with Google is, wait for it, the Google stuff just works, every time.

Wall to wall Apple myself. IPhone, iPad and iMac. All spreadsheets, text documents, pdf's, music, photos stored on iCloud. Every device talks to each other seamlessly. A joy to use. Expensive - yes, but you get what you pay for.
